Mexico Tops Group A with Narrow Win Over South Korea, Advances to 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage

Mexico Claims Group A Lead After 1-0 Victory Against South Korea

On Thursday, Mexico secured the top spot in Group A at the 2026 World Cup by defeating South Korea 1-0. This result guarantees Mexico’s place in the knockout round, making them the first team to advance from the group stage.

The opening half saw very little action, with Mexico attempting only three shots and South Korea failing to test the goalkeeper. The dull play frustrated Mexican fans, who expressed their displeasure with boos as the teams went into halftime without any goals.

Whatever sparked the change worked, because Mexico returned energized after the break. In the 50th minute, a critical error by Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu allowed Luis Romo to capitalize. Kim tried to catch the ball but collided with a teammate and lost possession, leaving Romo free to score into an open net.

Both sides pressed on for the remainder of the match. Kim redeemed himself with several strong saves to prevent Mexico from extending their lead, while South Korea generated a few promising opportunities but could not find the equalizer. Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel played a crucial role in preserving the clean sheet, including an incredible double save in the 87th minute that kept the score intact.

This win secures Mexico’s position atop Group A and ensures their participation in the Round of 32. As group leaders, El Tri will also enjoy the advantage of hosting their knockout matches on home soil.

South Korea still has a chance to claim second place in the group by earning a win or draw against South Africa in their final group game.
