Mexico Secures Spot in World Cup Last 32 with Win Over South Korea

Mexico Becomes First Team to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Co-hosts Mexico continued their flawless start at the 2026 World Cup by edging past South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara, clinching the first place in the last 32.

The decisive moment came in the 50th minute when midfielder Luis Romo capitalized on a spilled ball after goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu collided with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk. Romo simply tapped into an open net to give Mexico the lead.

South Korea’s Efforts Fall Short

South Korea’s best chance arrived late, around the 87th minute. Cho Gue-sung headed close-range but was denied by Mexico's keeper Raul Rangel, who also blocked Yang Hyun-jun’s follow-up attempt.

Earlier, captain Son Heung-min chipped over Rangel before his shot was cleared off the line by Edson Alvarez. The goal was disallowed for offside.

Despite a quiet first half that had the home crowd booing at halftime, Mexico nearly doubled their advantage in the 75th minute when Raul Jimenez fired from a tight angle but was saved.

Substitute Obed Vargas also tested Kim with a driven shot late in the match that forced a diving save.

Mexico Tops Group A

The victory kept Mexico's perfect record alive and guaranteed they will finish as Group A winners. This means they will play their last-32 and possibly last-16 matches in Mexico City. They could face England if Thomas Tuchel’s team wins their group and first knockout round.

South Korea, despite the loss, remain well placed to advance after beating Czech Republic on the opening day. Their next challenge is against South Africa on Thursday at 02:00 BST in Monterrey. Mexico faces Czech Republic simultaneously in Mexico City.
