Mexico Fans Trigger Seismic Vibrations Celebrating World Cup Victory Over Ecuador
After Mexico scored two decisive goals against Ecuador in a gripping World Cup knockout match, the jubilant crowd’s jumping sparked notable ground vibrations, according to seismologists. Mexico’s Digital Platform for Early Warning and Comprehensive Risk Management (SASSLA) detected that the fans’ cheering and excitement caused measurable tremors near the stadium.
SASSLA reported on X that the seismic instruments recorded activity when Julian Quiñones scored and again during Raúl Jiménez’s goal at the 31st minute. This intense celebration triggered short surface waves produced by the synchronized stomping of thousands of fans.
Human-Induced Tremors: A Known Phenomenon
These “human-induced earthquakes” aren’t new. They have occurred during large gatherings like concerts or major sporting events, as well as from activities such as high-rise construction, groundwater extraction, or fracking. For instance, a 2024 Taylor Swift concert with over 70,000 attendees generated similar seismic signals within a 9 km radius of the venue.
SASSLA noted, “The burst of euphoria and mass shouting produced vibrations in the local ground.” The nearby RaspberryShake station recorded an “outstanding artificial signal,” illustrating how intense crowd movement can mimic natural tremors.
How Seismographs Detect Crowd Vibrations
The quake monitoring system Sismo Alerta Mexicana explained on X that although these vibrations aren’t actual earthquakes, they are caused by the collective thud of people jumping simultaneously near sensitive instruments. Seismographs are extremely sensitive, capable of detecting movements across the globe, so when many people stomp together close to one, the effect is easily picked up.
The alert system added, “If someone walks near a seismograph, it will clearly detect it; and if several people jump at the same time near it, it's even easier.”
Tragic Consequences Amid the Celebrations
While the city rejoiced over Mexico’s 2-0 win securing a spot in the World Cup last 16, the celebrations had a dark side. In Mexico City, three people lost their lives after crowds swarmed the streets in excitement.

Research published in the journal Seismological Research Letters in 2024 describes how large crowds generate unique vibration patterns that resemble tremors. Scientists believe analyzing these signals could improve seismograph design, helping distinguish between natural quakes and human-induced vibrations.
Moreover, understanding these effects may aid in designing buildings and venues better equipped to withstand various types of ground movement.
