Manchester United Targets £80m Fernandes After Ederson Agreement

Manchester United’s summer rebuild under Michael Carrick is gathering pace – and it could soon get very expensive.

With a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson reportedly agreed at around £38.8million, United are already deep into their midfield overhaul. Casemiro’s departure has ripped out a chunk of experience and authority from the centre of the pitch, and Carrick, a former United metronome himself, is not waiting around to plug the gap before the club’s return to Champions League football.

Now comes the next move. And it could cost £80m.

United eye Fernandes after Ederson breakthrough

Having pushed through an agreement for Ederson, United are exploring a second major midfield addition – West Ham playmaker Mateus Fernandes.

ESPN report that United have already made contact with the London club, who are braced for a turbulent summer after relegation. Dropping out of the Premier League is expected to hit West Ham to the tune of around £100m, a financial blow that almost guarantees difficult decisions and high-profile exits.

Fernandes is right at the heart of that conversation.

According to The Times, West Ham have set an £80m valuation for the Portugal international, who impressed in his debut season at the London Stadium and has quickly drawn admiring glances from the league’s elite. Arsenal are also credited with interest, setting up the prospect of a straight fight between two of English football’s heavyweights for one of the most intriguing young playmakers in the division.

For United, the logic is clear. Ederson would add bite, legs and balance. Fernandes offers craft, line-breaking passes and the ability to dictate tempo higher up the pitch. Together, they would go a long way towards rebuilding a midfield that has looked increasingly short of control and personality since Casemiro’s influence began to wane.

The price tag is steep. The need is obvious.

Maguire’s next move comes off the pitch

While United’s recruitment team chase new faces, one of the club’s most high-profile defenders is preparing for a very different kind of summer.

Harry Maguire has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup, the second major tournament in a row he will miss after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024. For a player who once stood as a pillar of England’s back line at international tournaments, it marks a stark change in status.

He will still have a front-row seat to the action – just not on the grass.

Maguire is set to join “The Rest is Football” podcast throughout the tournament, lining up alongside Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. The trio of former England internationals will broadcast from a studio overlooking Times Square in New York, with Maguire adding a current-player perspective across 40 episodes.

It is a notable step for the centre-back, whose club future has often been under the microscope and whose international career now sits at a crossroads. As Carrick reshapes United’s dressing room and the club spend heavily to refresh the spine of the team, Maguire’s voice will be heard this summer not in a back four, but behind a microphone.

United, meanwhile, are pushing hard in the market. Ederson is expected. Fernandes is targeted. The bill is rising. The question now is whether this midfield rebuild can carry them back to where they insist they belong.
