Chelsea Demand £120m for Enzo Fernandez Amid City Midfield Shuffle
The clock is already ticking on the day’s biggest story. Chelsea have told Manchester City they have until 5pm today to put their money where their interest is over Enzo Fernandez – and it will take all of £120m.
City had hoped to chip away at that figure. Chelsea have no interest in haggling. The message from Stamford Bridge is blunt: meet the valuation or walk away. The tension between the clubs, sharpened by City’s £17m compensation payment when Enzo Maresca quit Chelsea for the Etihad, hangs over the talks. Chelsea felt “let down” by the Italian, and there will be no favours on this one.
For City, Enzo is the preferred solution if Rodri leaves. That is far from straightforward.
Rodri, Barcelona and a midfield reshuffle
Barcelona are pushing hard for Rodri and have already seen two bids rejected, the latest at £55m. City value the World Cup winner far higher and have so far stood firm. Talks continue, with the Premier League champions weighing up how far Barcelona are prepared to go.
At the same time, City’s midfield is being ripped up and rebuilt. Tijjani Reijnders is set to be the next to go, with Al Qadsiah agreeing a £51m deal. The Dutchman has accepted personal terms and is expected to leave after just a single season at the Etihad, having arrived from AC Milan for £46.5m last summer. His sale, combined with Nathan Ake’s move to Fenerbahce and James Trafford’s switch to Leeds, will push City’s income towards the £100m mark this window.
City are also leading the race for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, the World Cup breakout talent who has drawn admiring glances from across Europe. While one generation of midfielders edges out of the door, the next is being lined up.
And on the flanks, another change is coming.
Spurs close in on Savinho as De Zerbi rebuild gathers pace
Tottenham are closing on a deal for City winger Savinho in what would be another major piece of business under Roberto De Zerbi. An agreement worth £65m plus add-ons is moving closer, with Spurs increasingly confident of getting it done.
Savinho, signed by City from Troyes in 2024 for just over £30m, is still only 22. His sale would mark a substantial profit for City and hand Spurs a dynamic wide option at the start of a new era.
It has already been a heavy summer of recruitment in north London. Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka and Cole Ramsey have all arrived. Only Chelsea have spent more in the Premier League so far. Savinho would be another statement that Spurs intend to push hard under De Zerbi.
Arsenal weigh up Martinelli exit and Osimhen opportunity
Across north London, Arsenal’s window is far from over. Mikel Arteta has been clear on that, and the shape of his attack could yet change dramatically.
Galatasaray have lodged a £38.5m bid for Gabriel Martinelli, with the 25-year-old Brazilian high on their list of targets. Arsenal, who have already brought in winger Christos Tzolis, are at least listening. They have also been linked with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and PSG’s Bradley Barcola as they assess their options out wide.
The twist comes with Victor Osimhen. Discussions between Arsenal and Galatasaray have included the Nigerian striker’s future. According to reports, the possibility of Osimhen being involved in a deal that sends Martinelli the other way – and lowers the overall fee – has been raised. It remains unclear whether Arsenal are driving that scenario or whether Osimhen has simply been offered to them, but the club are in the market for a new attacker. The prospect of Osimhen in the Premier League is on the table.
If Arsenal choose to cash in on Martinelli to reshape their front line, the ramifications could ripple across the title race.
Liverpool bide their time on Barcola as PSG juggle their attack
Liverpool’s main target, like Arsenal’s, is Bradley Barcola. The 23-year-old PSG winger, fresh from scoring three goals for France at the World Cup, sits at the top of their list.
PSG’s price is steep: €170m (£145m). Liverpool are not biting at that level and are prepared to wait, convinced that the fee will drop if PSG bring in one or more forwards before the window shuts. With Maghnes Akliouche already signed from Monaco for €50m to bolster midfield, attention in Paris now turns to the attacking positions.
Liverpool, according to reports, have cooled on another PSG option, Ibrahim Mbaye, because signing both he and Barcola would be prohibitively expensive. Arsenal, watching the Barcola situation from a different angle, could yet enter the bidding if they decide to spend big on a winger.
PSG, for their part, are keeping their cards close. Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi has not ruled out a sale, saying only that the club are “working calmly” and that Barcola “today” remains a PSG player. The door is not shut.
Luis Enrique has been equally guarded. The PSG head coach refused to discuss Barcola’s future directly ahead of Wednesday’s Super Cup against Aston Villa in Salzburg, insisting he would not speak about individual players. Barcola, who only returned to training last Monday with the rest of the French and Spanish World Cup contingent, could still feature in that game even as speculation swirls around him.
Romero set for Atleti as Turkish market targets Premier League
Away from the headline midfield sagas, defenders are on the move. Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham for Cristian Romero in a deal worth around £34.2m plus add-ons, including a 15 per cent sell-on clause. Inter Milan had been linked with the Argentina international, but Atleti have stolen a march. The Spanish club are also closing on a move for Djed Spence.
Turkish clubs, meanwhile, continue to scour the Premier League. Galatasaray’s pursuit of Martinelli is the standout, but it fits a wider pattern of Super Lig sides pushing hard for top-flight talent before their own deadline.
All of which leaves the day balanced on a knife edge. Will City meet Chelsea’s £120m demand for Enzo Fernandez before the 5pm cut-off, or gamble on holding Rodri and reshaping their midfield another way?
