Manchester City Pursues Palmeiras Winger Elias Amid Squad Overhaul
Manchester City’s rebuild is stretching deep into Brazil. According to The Athletic, the Premier League champions are working on a deal to sign Palmeiras winger Elias as they scramble to refresh an attack stripped by a string of major departures.
The 22-year-old is one of several names on City’s list this window, with Tottenham Hotspur advancing in talks for Savinho and forcing the Etihad hierarchy to accelerate their own plans out wide. City like Elias. They have done their homework. But prising him out of São Paulo will be anything but simple.
Palmeiras dig in over €100m clause
Inside Palmeiras, the stance is hard and clear: Elias is not for sale this summer. The Brazilian club are prepared for interest, but not for compromise. Any side wanting to test that resolve has been pointed straight at his €100m release clause.
That figure sets up a potential stand-off. City have paid big for South American talent before, yet triggering a nine-figure clause would be a statement even by their standards. For now, Palmeiras are holding the line and daring Europe’s elite to cross it.
Rising star driving Palmeiras’ title charge
Elias has given them every reason to. Since breaking into the first team in 2025, he has become a central piece of Palmeiras’ project, clocking up 48 Serie A appearances with six goals and five assists. Those numbers only tell part of the story.
His rise has been sharp. Quick feet, balance in tight spaces, and a calmness on the ball that belies his age have pushed him firmly onto the radar of scouts across Europe. This season he has already hit six goals in all competitions, helping Palmeiras mount a strong push at the top of the Brazilian top flight.
Yet for all that domestic impact, he is still waiting for a senior international debut. That gap between club form and national recognition only adds to the sense that Europe’s giants see an opportunity to move early.
Maresca’s City in full-scale transition
City’s interest in Elias comes against the backdrop of one of the most dramatic squad overhauls of the club’s modern era. The spine that delivered so much silverware has been ripped apart.
Rodri, the midfield anchor and tactical reference point, has left for Barcelona. Bernardo Silva, City’s shape-shifter between lines and positions, has joined Real Madrid. Tijjani Reijnders has also departed the Etihad, leaving Enzo Maresca with a major reconstruction job just as he steps into the hottest of hot seats.
The churn has not stopped there. Newcastle United are in talks to sign midfielder Nico Gonzalez, underlining how much City’s core is being reshaped in a single window. Tottenham, meanwhile, are pushing on with their own rebuild, pursuing Omar Marmoush while they negotiate for Savinho.
South American strategy takes centre stage
Amid all this movement, one pattern at City is becoming unmistakable. The club are leaning harder than ever into the South American market.
If Elias arrives, he would be the latest piece in a clear strategic shift: identify elite talent early on the continent and bring it directly to Manchester. Vitor Reis came through the door in January 2025. Before that, City struck a deal with River Plate for Argentine youth international Claudio Echeverri for around £12.5m plus add-ons.
Those moves are no longer one-offs. They form a line. Elias would extend it.
New faces, early setback
City have not waited for the Elias situation to resolve before acting elsewhere. Elliott Anderson has joined from Nottingham Forest. Highly rated 17-year-old Jeremy Monga has arrived from Leicester City. Geronimo Rulli has been signed from Marseille to bolster the goalkeeping department.
On paper, the refresh looks bold. On the pitch, the early signs have been harsh. City’s campaign began with a jolt as Arsenal swept them aside 3-0 in the Community Shield, a result that underlined both the scale of the changes and the work still ahead for Maresca.
Next comes the real test. Bournemouth visit the Etihad on Sunday as City open their Premier League season, still juggling exits, arrivals and negotiations.
Whether Elias is part of that story this year remains to be seen. What is clear is that City’s future is being redrawn, and the battle for one of Brazil’s brightest wide talents has become a key subplot in a summer that could define Maresca’s era before it has truly begun.
