Liverpool Targets Barcola as Diomande Deal Stalls

Liverpool’s post-Mohamed Salah rebuild has hit its first major snag – and triggered an aggressive change of plan.

Fenway Sports Group had identified Yan Diomande as the long-term heir to Salah’s right-wing throne, a marquee piece in the next iteration of the club’s attack. Talks were held with the RB Leipzig star’s camp, Diomande lighting up the 2026 World Cup for Ivory Coast while Liverpool quietly positioned themselves in the background.

Two problems have now crashed into that strategy.

Leipzig do not want to sell. And the 19-year-old, for all Liverpool’s interest, prefers Paris.

With Diomande prioritising a move to Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool have shifted their sights to a player already inside the Parc des Princes: Bradley Barcola.

From Leipzig frustration to Paris opportunity

The dynamic is clear. Diomande’s expected arrival at PSG threatens to squeeze Barcola’s role, and Liverpool are trying to move before the market fully wakes up to that fact.

On June 29, Sky Sport Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported that PSG have already opened the door. He revealed that the French champions have held direct talks with several clubs, Liverpool among them, over Barcola’s future and that Diomande’s transfer “automatically opens the door” for the winger to leave.

That was the first signal. Liverpool have since pushed harder.

TEAMtalk now report that Liverpool have made fresh contact with Barcola’s agents this week. Their sources say the club have spoken again with the 23-year-old’s representatives in recent days and received renewed encouragement: Barcola is preparing to leave PSG before the transfer window closes.

The message reaching Anfield is simple. The player is gettable. At the right price.

A serial winner on the market

For Liverpool, the appeal is obvious.

Since joining PSG in 2023, Barcola has collected a medal haul that would fill most careers. Three Ligue 1 titles. Two Coupe de France wins. Two Champions League triumphs. All before his 24th birthday.

He is part of France’s squad at the 2026 World Cup, another marker of his status at the elite level. This is not a speculative punt on potential; it is a move for a winger hardened by knockout nights and title races, used to carrying the expectations of a superclub.

Liverpool, staring at the void left by Salah’s exit, need end product, fearlessness and big-stage experience in wide areas. Barcola ticks every box on paper.

The €120m question

There is, however, the cost.

TEAMtalk claim PSG value Barcola at €120 million (£103.3m). That figure is no coincidence. It effectively mirrors what PSG themselves would have to pay Leipzig for Diomande.

In other words, if Paris land Diomande at that price, they expect to recoup a similar sum for Barcola. One in, one out. The market neatly balanced on a nine-figure fee.

For Liverpool, it poses a familiar dilemma. Pay at the very top of the market for a player stepping into Salah’s shadow, or walk away and risk being left short in a season of transition.

What is clear is that the club are not standing still. Diomande may be slipping towards Paris, but Liverpool have already knocked on another door in the French capital. Whether they are prepared to smash it down for €120m will define the shape – and ambition – of their attack for years to come.
