Liverpool's Urgent Summer Rebuild Under Andoni Iraola

Liverpool face a summer of upheaval under new head coach Andoni Iraola, with as many as seven signings being tipped as necessary to repair what insiders describe as “major issues” in the squad.

The former Bournemouth boss has signed a two-year deal to succeed Arne Slot and walks into a dressing room stripped of some of its biggest pillars and braced for more departures. Liverpool’s defence of their 20th Premier League title fell flat, and the sense inside the club is clear: this is not a light refresh. This is surgery.

Seven positions, one urgent rebuild

Football Insider report that Liverpool are being urged to “complete seven new signings” this window, with a senior source outlining a squad in need of sweeping change across the pitch.

“Iraola is going to face some major issues immediately,” the source said, explaining that the Spaniard is understood to have already run his eye over the squad ahead of his official unveiling. The conclusion, according to that assessment, is stark: “There are probably six or seven positions with players already in need of replacing.”

Go through the team, one by one, and the scale of the task sharpens.

In goal, Alisson Becker “could be leaving”, with the Brazil international now the latest heavyweight name linked with an exit after Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. Liverpool have already blocked a move to Juventus, but Alisson is expected to hold talks with the Anfield hierarchy over his future. If he goes, that’s not just a position to fill; it’s a leader, a reference point, ripped out of the spine.

At the back, Robertson has already gone, Ibrahima Konaté is also described as heading for the exit, and Virgil van Dijk, at 34, is edging into the final phase of his career. The source is blunt: they “need a right-back” on top of that. Centre-back, left-back, right-back – almost the entire defensive line is under review.

Life after Salah – and more gaps up front

The problems do not stop there. Salah has gone, leaving a gaping hole on the right wing and in Liverpool’s goal output. Hugo Ekitike, seen as part of the attacking plan, is out injured until next year, removing another option from Iraola’s first campaign.

That’s at least two attacking roles that need fresh blood, on top of the work required at the back. No wonder the internal talk is of six or seven positions needing replacements.

Liverpool have been linked with RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, who has emerged as a leading candidate to step into the void left by Salah. A swap deal involving an underperforming Liverpool player has been floated as a possible route to get that move done. The feeling around Anfield is that the club may even need two new wingers before the window shuts.

Recruitment plans are not limited to the flanks. The club are also expected to seek upgrades at right-back, centre-back and central midfield, reshaping the core of the side in one frantic summer.

Backing Iraola – or wasting the reset?

Inside Liverpool, the expectation is that Iraola will arrive fully briefed and fully aware of the scale of the rebuild.

“Already, that’s multiple key positions that need dealing with, and the manager will know that better than anybody, he will be prepared,” the Football Insider source added. The question now is not whether the problems exist. It is whether Liverpool’s ownership will arm their new coach with the resources to fix them in one window.

“It’s now about whether he will get that backing, and I expect he will, to make the changes that need to be made,” the source said. The target is unambiguous: “Ultimately, the goal for Iraola at Liverpool is going to be to make them successful again, but to do that, he’s going to need a lot of support.”

Seven signings. A fractured spine. Icons gone, others weighing up their futures. Iraola has asked for a project; Liverpool have handed him a reconstruction. How quickly the club moves in this window will tell everyone how serious they are about returning to the top – and how soon Anfield will see a team that truly looks like his.
