Jamie Carragher Defends Myles Lewis-Skelly Amid Arsenal Transfer Rumors

Jamie Carragher has slammed the idea that Arsenal would even contemplate cashing in on Myles Lewis-Skelly, branding the young midfielder “pretty special” and admitting he “can’t believe” the club would entertain offers for him.

Arsenal, fresh from winning the Premier League title, have moved aggressively in the market, landing Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes and turning Piero Hincapie’s stay into a permanent deal. As talk of Guimaraes gathered pace, one rumour cut through the noise: Lewis-Skelly, who impressed in midfield late last season, had supposedly been offered to Chelsea and Manchester United.

That suggestion stopped Carragher in his tracks.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, he laid out his disbelief at the story.

“That’s the thing that was a little bit strange about it. It felt almost like Arsenal offered Manchester United Myles Lewis-Skelly,” he said. “It wasn’t Myles Lewis-Skelly saying, I want to leave, or his people putting something out. That’s where the shock came from, not so much the players’ side of it.

“I still can’t believe it.”

Carragher then went back to the games that shaped his view of the teenager. He highlighted Lewis-Skelly’s standout display at the Bernabeu – deployed at left-back, yet “running the game” against Real Madrid around a year to 18 months ago – and his performance in central midfield in a final against Paris Saint-Germain.

“You can’t play at that level unless you’re pretty special at that age,” Carragher insisted. He acknowledged that last season “wasn’t great for him for the whole season” and that the youngster did not feature as often as he would have liked, but he was adamant that such dips are part of any young player’s journey.

“But his ceiling is so high for the performances he’s already put in as a 20-year-old kid. I couldn’t believe that Arsenal would even think about letting him go. It does feel like a strange one.”

As the debate rumbled on, the transfer narrative began to unravel.

Reports that Arsenal had actively offered Lewis-Skelly to Premier League rivals have since been strongly dismissed. Caught Offside, The Athletic and the Daily Mail all reported that the club made no such proposal.

Mark Brus, writing for Caught Offside, underlined that stance, stating he had checked the story repeatedly with his sources. His conclusion was blunt: there is “no desire” from Arsenal to sell Lewis-Skelly, and the player himself has no intention of leaving.

He also pushed back on claims that Chelsea and Manchester United had “rejected” the 19-year-old, pointing out the obvious contradiction: a club cannot turn down a player who is neither for sale nor pushing for a move.

So the picture is clearer. Arsenal’s title defence will be built around big-money signings, but the message around Lewis-Skelly is just as important: the club see him as part of their future, not a bargaining chip.
