Liverpool's Injury Woes Ahead of Premier League Opener
Andoni Iraola is still waiting for clarity. Liverpool’s new head coach heads into his first Premier League game at the helm on Sunday not fully sure who he can trust to step out at St James’ Park.
Liverpool open their campaign away to Newcastle United, but the squad travelling north will be patched together. Four senior players are already ruled out, several more are doubts, and the new era begins with a medical bulletin as long as a team sheet.
Long-term absentees cloud Iraola’s debut
Up front, Hugo Ekitike is facing a race just to play again before the year is out. The forward suffered a serious Achilles injury in early April and his recovery will stretch deep into the season, leaving a significant hole in Liverpool’s attacking options.
At right-back, Conor Bradley is still working his way back from major knee damage picked up at Arsenal in early January. His absence strips Iraola of an energetic option on the flank at a time when he is trying to stamp his style on the side.
In central defence, there is at least a hint of better news. Giovanni Leoni is edging closer to a return to full training after missing action since last September with an ACL injury. He will not be ready for Newcastle, but the pathway back is finally visible.
Joe Gomez, though, remains stuck on the treatment table. The defender picked up a muscle problem in the opening pre-season friendly against Sunderland and has not shaken it off in time for the curtain-raiser. For a coach who values intensity and flexibility at the back, it is a significant early frustration.
Fresh doubts in key positions
The problems do not stop there. Curtis Jones, who has attracted transfer interest from Inter, has missed the last two weekends with a hip issue. His availability remains uncertain, depriving Iraola of a midfielder who can dictate tempo and press aggressively if he fails to make it.
Behind him, the goalkeeping situation is also under scrutiny. Freddie Woodman sat out both friendlies against Como on Sunday, having carried an injury through much of pre-season. His status for the trip to Newcastle is unclear, adding another layer of uncertainty to Iraola’s first competitive squad.
Youth options are thinning out as well. Striker Jayden Danns and midfielder Stefan Bajcetic are both sidelined with muscle problems, removing two of the most promising young alternatives from the bench as Liverpool look to manage minutes early in the campaign.
Newcastle also counting the cost
Newcastle, who have already waved goodbye to a number of senior players this summer, are hardly unscathed themselves.
Midfielder Joelinton is out for several weeks with an undisclosed issue, robbing Eddie Howe’s side of one of their most physical and combative presences in the middle of the pitch.
At the back, there are more question marks. Valentino Livramento and Fabian Schar are both rated doubtful for Liverpool’s visit, potentially forcing reshuffles in a defence that will be tested by Iraola’s high-tempo approach.
So the season opens with two ambitious clubs juggling absentees, patching together plans, and asking early questions of their squads. On Sunday, we find out whose depth holds up under the first real spotlight.
