Barcelona's Summer Transfer Focus: Julián Álvarez and Striker Market

Barcelona’s summer plan has narrowed. With Rodri already through the door, the club see only two real priorities left: a centre-back and, above all, a centre-forward.

The defence can wait. The attack cannot.

Waiting on Julián Álvarez

Everything revolves around Julián Álvarez. Barcelona view the Argentine as the ideal addition up front and know he is keen on a move to Catalonia. His next step is a key one: a meeting with the Atletico Madrid hierarchy later this week.

That is where the stalemate could finally crack – or harden.

Álvarez wants the move, but so far he has not shown the willingness to openly force Atletico’s hand. The club do not want to sanction his departure, and the player has yet to take a firm, confrontational stance that might change their position.

Inside Barcelona, the clock is ticking.

According to the latest from Víctor Navarro, sporting director Deco has already begun to explore alternative options. For now, though, he is holding the line, giving Álvarez a little more time to act.

The internal deadline is clear: if there is no concrete movement on Álvarez’s situation by Saturday, Barcelona will start to pivot decisively towards other targets. Work on those backup plans is already under way. As things stand, they are prepared, lined up, and simply waiting for the weekend to arrive before being fully activated.

All eyes now turn to Álvarez’s midweek summit with Atletico’s leadership. The mood around the negotiation is far from upbeat. Diego Simeone publicly stated earlier today that the striker will not be leaving, a blunt message that underlines how resistant Atletico are to any deal.

Barcelona are effectively waiting to see whether Álvarez is willing to challenge that stance.

A thin striker market – and new names

If he does not, the landscape becomes more complicated. The striker market this summer is sparse, and very few attainable options truly fit what Barcelona want from their No. 9.

Earlier in the week, reports linked Sporting striker Luis Suárez with a possible move to Catalonia. On paper, it sounded intriguing. In reality, those rumours were quickly cooled, with clarification that the interest was not as strong or advanced as initially suggested.

Attention has since turned elsewhere.

In recent hours, Villarreal forward Georges Mikautadze has emerged as a prominent name on Barcelona’s list. His profile is now being treated as a serious alternative should the Álvarez pursuit collapse.

For now, though, everything hinges on one meeting and one decision. If Álvarez does not push, Deco will. And Barcelona’s search for a new striker will accelerate in a very different direction by the weekend.
