Leeds United Advance Talks to Sign Manchester City's James Trafford
Leeds United are reportedly in negotiations to acquire goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City during the upcoming summer transfer window. With Karl Darlow, who had been first-choice under manager Daniel Farke in the latter part of the 2025-26 season, moving on to Manchester United on a free transfer, Leeds find themselves seeking fresh options to challenge Lucas Perri for the starting spot.
Earlier speculation hinted at Japan's Zion Suzuki possibly joining Leeds from Parma, but that avenue seems to have cooled down. The Athletic reports that Leeds are now focusing their efforts on Trafford, who is eager to leave the Etihad Stadium in search of more regular playtime.
Progress in Negotiations for Trafford
Leeds' pursuit of the England international goalkeeper appears to be gaining momentum. Unlike previous interest from Newcastle United, Leeds seem to be the frontrunners to secure Trafford’s signature. Although he made just 17 appearances across all competitions for City last season, with only four coming in the Premier League, the 23-year-old goalkeeper contributed significantly to City's victories in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
City acquired Trafford from Burnley last summer for a fee believed to be between 3 million and 31 million, and they will likely seek a similar amount in this transfer.
Leeds Show Ambition for Upcoming Season
After managing to stay in the Premier League thanks to a strong second half of the 2025-26 season, Leeds are aiming higher for 2026-27, targeting a top-half finish. Their recent signings include defender Tarik Muharemovic from Bosnia & Herzegovina for 34 million and Harry Wilson from Fulham on a free transfer, which already indicate strategic moves to strengthen the squad.
If Trafford joins Leeds, it would represent an upgrade over Darlow, especially since Trafford is seen as a potential future number one for England. This signing could reflect Leeds' intent to solidify their defensive line and improve consistency in goal.
