Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes Resolve Public Spat Over Assist Record

Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes have drawn a line under their public spat over the Premier League assist record, with the former Manchester United captain revealing the pair shared what he called a “lovely chat” to clear the air.

The row began when Keane, speaking on The Overlap last month, recalled an interview in which he claimed Fernandes admitted choosing to pass instead of shoot while chasing the Premier League assist record. The problem? Fernandes had actually said the opposite. The current United skipper later went on The Diary of a CEO podcast, accused Keane of telling a “lie”, and made it clear he wanted a direct conversation with the 54-year-old.

The pressure finally told this week.

On the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Keane explained that Fernandes had reached out and that the two had spoken at length away from the cameras and microphones that sparked the misunderstanding in the first place.

“He apologised, I forgave him, no problem,” Keane said with a grin, before softening the punchline. “But no, it was a good chat.

“There was a reaction after what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat… I called him and we had a lovely chat.

“A lovely chat about a bit of everything, but it was nice because when we do podcasts or games, sometimes you think you say something afterwards and you communicate something and it doesn’t come across properly, so people get upset and he said he wanted to talk to me.

“And we had a nice, mature conversation. It was lovely. A lovely chat.”

For a man who built a career on hard lines and harder tackles, Keane made it clear he still values distance from current players, even as his words carry weight in the modern dressing room.

“I like having boundaries with players. I don’t want to be speaking to players every few weeks or their agents, I don’t want to go down that road, but every now and then a player might reach out, so it was important I spoke to him.

“There has been lots going on and lots reported. He’s obviously a big player for United, I’m an ex-United player and the idea of this communicating and having a proper conversation, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully he did as well.

“Nice chat about a bit of everything and I felt better afterwards.”

Fernandes’ Status

The thaw comes at a time when Fernandes’ status at Old Trafford has never been more scrutinised or more significant. The Portugal international has just rewritten part of the Premier League record book, setting a new single-season assist mark and moving beyond the revered totals of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, who both hit 20.

His campaign has prompted a deeper look at what his “legacy season” might mean for United’s future. Sky Sports News’ Danyal Khan has already examined Fernandes’ influence, the assist record and the details of his contract, including the release clause that shapes any long-term conversation about his place at the club.

While the captain’s own future remains a constant talking point, United are also trying to reshape the midfield around him.

The club are exploring a move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Sky Sports News reporting that the Hammers value the Portuguese player at around £80m. West Ham, relegated from the Premier League, signed him for an initial £38m last summer and are under no immediate pressure to sell.

United, though, see an opening. They are carrying out detailed background work on the 22-year-old and view him as a realistic target in a window where strengthening the midfield remains a clear priority.

One Fernandes has just broken a record and settled a feud with a United legend. Another could yet arrive to help shape the next phase of the club’s rebuild.
