Juventus Signs Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham
Juventus have turned to north London for their new goalkeeper, striking a deal with Tottenham to take Guglielmo Vicario on an initial loan with an option to buy, after abandoning a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez.
The Italian, who arrived at Spurs in 2023 for £17.2m and has since racked up almost 120 appearances, has slipped down the pecking order under Roberto De Zerbi. Antonin Kinsky has taken over as No 1, and Martin Dubravka has come in on a free to provide back-up. The message to Vicario was clear: his starting spot had gone.
Juventus have moved quickly. The agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent next year for £8.6m, a figure that underlines how sharply Vicario’s situation has shifted since he joined Tottenham as a long-term solution only a year ago.
Juve’s interest had initially been trained on Martínez. Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper became a live target once the Premier League club agreed a deal worth around £30m for Parma’s Zion Suzuki. An offer of €10m from Turin for Martínez was rejected over the weekend, though, and with the Argentina international currently out with a finger injury, the Italian side changed course and pushed ahead for Vicario instead.
For Spurs, the deal is another significant outgoing in a summer of heavy churn. Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma have already departed, and Vicario is now set to join that exodus. Pape Matar Sarr could follow: Everton and Nottingham Forest are both keen, with the Senegal midfielder valued at £30m.
All of this comes against the backdrop of major investment. Tottenham have already spent more than £200m on six new signings in this window, reshaping the squad to De Zerbi’s demands and leaving little room for sentiment around those pushed to the fringes.
The rebuild is far from done. Spurs are working on a move for Savinho from Manchester City, with the Brazil forward omitted from Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff and understood to be open to a switch. Cody Gakpo also remains firmly on the radar, with De Zerbi eager to add more punch to his front line and Liverpool braced for further interest.
As Vicario heads for Turin in search of a fresh start, Tottenham’s transfer carousel keeps spinning – and the next big attacking arrival now feels like only a matter of time.
