Barcelona Secures Rodri Transfer from Manchester City

After days of hard bargaining and dead ends, FC Barcelona have finally cracked the Rodri saga wide open.

Over the weekend, Barça and Manchester City reached an agreement in principle for the 30-year-old midfielder in a deal worth €76.5 million. €60 million will be paid up front, with the remaining sum tied to performance-related add-ons. A heavyweight fee for a heavyweight signing.

City have already given their midfield general the green light to travel to Catalonia and wrap up the move, clearing the way for Barcelona to push the transfer over the line.

Change of plan for medicals

The final steps, though, have not been entirely straightforward.

Rodri had originally been scheduled to complete his medical tests in England today before flying out to Spain. That was the plan: tidy up the paperwork, pass the checks, then say his goodbyes at Manchester City.

Then Barcelona found an earlier flight.

According to journalist Achraf Ben Ayad, the Spain captain will now undergo his medical in Catalonia on Tuesday morning, 18 August. The club moved quickly once they secured travel for him to Barcelona today, altering the schedule and bringing him into the city sooner than expected.

Rodri is expected to land in Barcelona later this evening. The medical will follow on Tuesday morning, and once the tests are done, he will sit down to sign his contract. Only then will the club finally be able to make the transfer official.

Flick’s midfield anchor

For Barcelona, this is more than a marquee name. It is a statement.

Rodri arrives as one of the most complete midfielders in world football, fresh from a dominant World Cup campaign in which he led Spain to the 2026 FIFA World Cup title and collected the Golden Ball. He also holds the 2024 Ballon d’Or, a reflection of the level he has maintained at the heart of club and country.

At 30, he is not a project for the distant future. He is a win-now signing. Experience, leadership, and a ruthless winning mentality come baked into his profile, on top of his control, positioning, and passing range. For Hansi Flick, trying to impose structure and authority on this Barcelona side, Rodri looks tailor-made to become the reference point in midfield.

One question lingers in the short term: how quickly can he be thrown into action?

Barcelona face Al Ahly on 19 August in the Joan Gamper Trophy, their final pre-season outing. With the medical, contract signing, and official announcement still to be ticked off, it remains unclear whether Flick will risk his new cornerstone so soon.

If he does, the Camp Nou crowd may get an early glimpse of the player tasked with steering Barcelona’s midfield through the next decisive chapter of their rebuild.
