Arsenal Faces Big Decision on Martin Zubimendi Amid Real Madrid Interest

Arsenal stand on the brink of one of the defining calls of their summer – and possibly their season – as Real Madrid step up their pursuit of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The European giants have reignited their interest and, this time, they are serious.

Mourinho’s green light, Madrid’s big play

According to TEAMtalk, Jose Mourinho has given full approval for Madrid to move for the 27-year-old. The Portuguese coach sees Zubimendi as a prime solution to tighten his holding midfield, a player who can bring control and authority at the base of his side’s structure.

Initial contact has already been made over what would be a blockbuster transfer. Zubimendi’s camp have reportedly made it clear he is very keen on the idea of a return to Spain and the chance to play at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid sense an opening. They believe this is an unexpected window to tempt the Arsenal man back to his homeland, especially after missing out on Rodri and with uncertainty around Eduardo Camavinga’s future.

Mourinho wants more dominance in the middle of the pitch. Zubimendi sits near the top of his list to deliver it.

Arsenal’s dilemma: depth vs. disruption

Arsenal, though, are not in a hurry to sell. The club are not actively pushing Zubimendi out and are said to be only willing to think about a deal if the offer is right – very right.

There is tension in the reporting around their stance. The Sun claims Mikel Arteta is desperate to keep the midfielder and would only even consider a sale if an “exceptional” proposal lands on the table. The manager’s resolve, however, could be tested if Zubimendi himself pushes hard for a lucrative move to Madrid in the coming weeks.

On the pitch, the situation is complicated. Zubimendi was pivotal in Arsenal’s remarkable Premier League title triumph last season, anchoring a side that finally got over the line in England. Yet his starting spot is no longer guaranteed.

The £75 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United has crowded an already elite midfield. Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Guimaraes now scrap for minutes in central areas, giving Arsenal the kind of depth top managers crave.

That depth cuts both ways. Letting an experienced World Cup winner leave after just one season would be a huge risk, especially for a squad defending the title and hunting the Champions League at the same time. One injury, one suspension, and a “surplus” player suddenly becomes essential again.

No bargain, no pressure

Crucially, Arsenal are under no financial pressure. Zubimendi is tied to a lucrative long-term contract, which hands the north London club total control over the situation.

They can afford to say no. They can afford to wait.

For a club with clear ambitions of staying at the summit of the Premier League and making a serious run in Europe, selling a key squad member simply because competition has increased would cut against everything they are trying to build.

Madrid know this. If they want to shift the conversation from interest to agreement, they will have to go big – a bid comfortably above what Arsenal originally invested, something that forces the English champions to pause and think.

Until such an offer arrives, the stance at the Emirates is simple: Zubimendi stays, the title defence continues, and Madrid will have to decide how far they are willing to push to change that.
