Inter's Josep Martinez Confident in Italy’s Comeback After World Cup Setbacks

Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez has voiced strong confidence in Italy’s future as the four-time World Cup winners attempt to bounce back from missing three straight World Cups. Martinez sees a wealth of talent under coach Roberto Mancini and believes regaining mental strength is key during this rebuilding phase.

Italian Revival Rooted in Confidence, Not Quality Loss

The Inter keeper thinks Italy’s struggles on the international stage come down mainly to psychological hurdles rather than a drop in player ability. Missing out on three World Cups created a big confidence blow for the Azzurri. Mancini has been charged with refreshing the squad, bringing in young players to reshape the team’s style and identity.

Martinez Highlights Mental Aspect Over Skill Deficit

Having competed alongside many top Italian talents in Serie A, Martinez insists that technical skill is not lacking. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said: "Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there’s no lack of quality. There are several high-level Inter players and many other valid elements with them. They need to regain confidence after the disappointment of missing the World Cup; for me, it’s more a mental thing than a quality issue."

Martinez’s Return to International Duty

Martinez’s optimism comes as he earned a call-up to Spain’s national team, marking his return since his sole senior cap in June 2021. An injury to Joan Garcia paved the way for Martinez to join the squad alongside David Raya and Unai Simon.

Upcoming Test Against France

Italy’s new generation faces a crucial test soon, traveling to Paris to meet France at the Stade de France in UEFA Nations League Group A1. Mancini will need to craft a strong tactical plan against Zinedine Zidane’s French side. Achieving a positive result there is important to boost team morale and keep hopes alive for advancing to the knockout rounds.
