Saudi Arabia Suspends $2.5bn Neom Stadium Project Ahead of 2034 World Cup
Saudi Arabia has put the $2.5 billion Neom stadium project on hold as part of its preparations for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. This stadium, planned to be a centerpiece of the futuristic Neom megacity, was designed to hold 46,000 spectators and play a key role in the kingdom’s vision for the first-ever 48-team tournament held by a single country.
Construction Status and Future Unclear
The project is currently classified as suspended with no clear timeline for resumption, according to MEED Projects and Reuters. This decision casts doubt on Saudi Arabia's ability to deliver all 15 stadiums promised to FIFA when the kingdom was awarded sole hosting rights for the expanded World Cup format.
Shift in National Spending Priorities
The stadium was meant to rise 350 meters above ground within The Line development, a major element of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 plan. Yet, recent statements from Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan indicate that The Line is no longer a top priority before 2030, signaling a strategic reallocation of government funds.
Tournament Preparations Continue Despite Setbacks
Saudi officials remain confident that the World Cup preparations are progressing, despite the halt of both the Neom stadium and the Mukaab skyscraper project in Riyadh. The Saudi World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority insists that significant infrastructure work is underway at other venues. FIFA had earlier praised Saudi Arabia's overall tournament proposal as remarkable.
Economic Challenges Add Pressure
The suspension comes amid growing economic difficulties for Saudi Arabia. The finance ministry forecasts a budget deficit alongside a 3.6% contraction in real GDP, driven by falling oil revenues. Regional instability, including attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels near Aramco facilities in Riyadh, further complicates the situation.
For Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, successfully delivering the 2034 World Cup remains a critical goal for enhancing the kingdom’s global economic standing and reputation.
