Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona with Three-Year Contract

Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona – this time to stay.

The Portugal full-back has signed a three-year contract at Camp Nou after mutually terminating his deal with Al-Hilal, sealing a permanent return to the club where he helped deliver last season’s La Liga title while on loan.

Cancelo had joined the Saudi Pro League side from Manchester City on a three-year agreement in 2024, but his time there quickly fractured. He finished the campaign in Barcelona colours, driving Xavi’s side down the right flank as they overhauled their rivals in the title race. Once his Al-Hilal contract was ripped up this summer, the 32-year-old hit the market as a free agent – and Barca moved quickly to bring him back.

"It's my dream," Cancelo said on signing. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."

For Cancelo, Spain is familiar ground. He first arrived in La Liga in 2014, joining Valencia from Benfica on loan before making the move permanent and building his reputation as one of Europe’s most adventurous full-backs.

From there his career turned into a tour of the continent’s elite. A loan spell at Inter Milan in 2017-18 showcased his attacking instincts in Serie A, leading to a permanent transfer to Juventus in 2018. Manchester City followed in 2019, where he evolved into a hybrid full-back under Pep Guardiola, drifting into midfield and collecting major honours.

His journey then scattered across Europe’s heavyweights. He ended the 2022-23 season on loan at Bayern Munich, adding the Bundesliga to his CV, before heading to Barcelona on a season-long loan from City for 2023-24. That campaign revived his bond with Barca and set the stage for this third stint with the Spanish giants – but crucially, his first as a permanent signing.

Barcelona have underlined their intent on the right side of the pitch in the space of a week. Alongside Cancelo’s return, the club have also completed the capture of his former Manchester City team-mate Rodri, agreeing to pay around £65m for the Spain midfielder.

Two familiar faces from City. One title-winning full-back already at home in Barcelona. The question now is simple: how far can this reshaped core push Barca in the seasons to come?
