Inter Signs Spence: Long-Term Deal Secured

Inter have made a statement down their right side, tying up the permanent signing of Spence from Tottenham Hotspur on a deal that runs all the way to June 2031.

Fresh off his 26th birthday, the England international has committed the prime years of his career to San Siro, signing a long-term contract worth a reported €2.5m per season plus performance-related bonuses. Inter moved quickly and decisively once the green light appeared, wrapping up medicals both with the club and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) before pushing the move over the line.

Tottenham receive €31.5m up front, with a further €3.5m in add-ons linked to performance milestones.

For a player whose reputation has soared over the past two years, it is a fee that reflects both present level and future upside.

A return to Italy, a different Inter

This is not Spence’s first taste of Serie A. His six-month loan at Genoa in 2024 proved a turning point, a spell that showcased his intensity, athleticism and work rate to the rest of the league. Inter’s hierarchy watched closely. Those months convinced them he could handle the physical and tactical demands of Cristian Chivu’s system.

Crucially, Spence brings something coaches crave: options. Comfortable on either flank, he can operate as a right or left wing-back without a drop in output, giving Inter rare tactical flexibility in wide areas. In a side that leans heavily on its wing-backs for width, pressing and penetration, that versatility carries real weight.

World Cup platform

Spence arrives in Milan with his reputation burnished on the biggest stage. During the 2026 World Cup in North America, he became a fixture for the Three Lions, starting all eight matches of England’s run.

He lined up in the semifinal defeat to Argentina, then again in the third-place playoff, where England beat France. That consistency at international level, under intense scrutiny and pressure, has pushed his profile into a different bracket and hardened the belief that he can anchor a flank for a club with Inter’s ambitions.

End of a chapter at Spurs

His departure from Tottenham closes a four-year chapter that began when he joined from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for an initial £19m. Across 85 appearances, Spence’s Spurs career was one of steady growth and resilience, marked by battles for his place and stretches where he had to fight his way back into the picture.

Tottenham’s own summer reshaping helped open the door. The arrival of veteran full-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool gives Spurs an experienced presence and leadership on the left side of defence, easing the blow of losing a player of Spence’s calibre and profile.

An English core in Milan

For Inter, Spence is the second England international through the door this summer. John Stones has already arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City, adding authority and composure to the back line. With Stones and Spence now in the same dressing room, Chivu gains not just quality, but a core of players accustomed to the intensity of Premier League and international football.

The timing is deliberate. Inter’s Serie A campaign begins at home to Monza on August 22, and Chivu will want his new wing-back fully integrated by then, drilled into the patterns and pressing triggers that define this side.

Inter have paid big money and handed a long contract to secure their man. The bet is clear: Spence is not just a solution for this season’s right flank, but the cornerstone of it for years to come.
