Inter Milan Signs Djed Spence for €30m from Tottenham

Inter Milan have wrapped up the signing of England full-back Djed Spence from Tottenham, handing the defender a five-year contract and another major stage for the prime of his career.

The Serie A champions are paying a fee in the region of 30m euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old, who becomes the second England international to arrive at San Siro this summer after John Stones joined on a free following the end of his Manchester City deal.

Farewell to Spurs, “time for a new chapter”

Spence had already signposted his departure before the deal was announced. On Saturday he posted an emotional goodbye to Tottenham supporters across his social media channels, effectively closing the book on four eventful years in north London.

“A special chapter comes to an end, It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao.

“Thanks to all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly thank you to the fans. Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”

That “night in Bilbao” will live long with Spurs fans too. Spence played his part in the club’s 2024-25 Europa League triumph, a landmark trophy in the modern era for Tottenham and a high point in his 85 appearances for the club.

From World Cup mainstay to Inter’s new weapon

Spence arrives in Italy off the back of a gruelling but impressive season. He featured in all eight of England’s matches at the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s side battled their way to a third-place finish, underlining his status as a trusted option on the biggest stage.

For Spurs, he remained heavily involved as well. The full-back made 44 appearances in all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, a workload that showcased both his durability and his importance to Roberto de Zerbi’s plans for much of the season.

Yet the landscape at Tottenham shifted quickly. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro committed his future to the club with a new contract in June, while Andy Robertson arrived from Liverpool to strengthen the left side of defence. With both flanks suddenly crowded, Spence’s pathway to guaranteed minutes narrowed.

De Zerbi made it clear in July that he wanted to persuade Spence to stay. The club had, after all, invested in him early, paying an initial £12.5m to sign him from Middlesbrough in 2022 and watching him grow into a key part of their European success.

But Inter’s call, and the promise of a central role for the Italian champions, proved decisive.

A return to familiar territory

This move is not Spence’s first taste of Italian football. He previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024, a short spell that offered a glimpse of how his energetic, front-foot style could translate to Serie A.

Now he comes back not as a loanee fighting for minutes, but as a marquee signing for the reigning champions, walking into a dressing room that already includes fellow England international Stones and a squad built to compete deep into the Champions League.

From Middlesbrough to Bilbao, from a World Cup podium to the Curva Nord, Spence’s journey has rarely been straightforward. Inter have paid for his prime years. What he does with them, in the glare of San Siro, will define the next chapter of his career.
