Francesco Totti Reveals Offers from Top European Leagues at Age 48

It sounds unbelievable, but Francesco Totti could have returned to professional football in Serie A at the age of 48. The 2006 World Cup winner confirmed that several clubs showed interest in bringing him back despite his retirement in 2017.

Inquiries from Genoa and Como

Totti revealed that in October 2024, both Genoa and Como approached him with offers. He declined both, explaining the unusual situation considering his age. At 48, he would have been significantly older than those coaching him. Genoa’s coach, Alberto Gilardino, also a 2006 World Cup champion, was 42, while Cesc Fàbregas, on Como’s bench, was 37. "I would have been six and eleven years older than the people being paid to tell me what to do," Totti said. "These are not fairy tales, this is the plain truth. Incredible, but true. Crazy," he added in his autobiography Oltre, as quoted by Corriere della Sera.

Serious Talks and Training Regimen

The first contact came from Genoa, where Totti spoke directly to the club’s management who were serious about signing him. He even began training again and adjusted his diet, cutting out bread and sweets. Despite nearing 50, the physical effort felt manageable, though he experienced typical aches. "My head said I could say yes, my heart said no. Then the roles reversed," he explained. Still, doubts remained as he questioned whether he could play for any team other than Roma.

Love for Roma Prevented the Return

Ultimately, his deep connection with Roma stopped him from accepting the offers. "It was not my age that held me back but my love for my former club," he said. "Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48." His loyalty to Roma remained the decisive factor in turning down the chance to continue playing professionally.
