How Folarin Balogun’s Red Card Earned Americans Free Pizza from Domino’s
The United States men's national soccer team lost a key player after Folarin Balogun was shown a red card during their World Cup Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This suspension will keep Balogun out of the next game against Belgium, but some American fans might find a silver lining thanks to Domino’s.
Domino’s Offers Pizza for Red Cards
Before the tournament, Domino’s launched a promotion called "Emergency Pizzas for Red Card." It promised that if any USMNT player received a red card, select entrants who signed up by June 10 would win free or discounted pizza coupons.
According to the promotion details, up to 63,371 participants were randomly chosen to get a coupon for a free medium two-topping pizza. Everyone else who entered would receive a consolation coupon for 20% off certain menu items.
Domino’s stated, "We’re definitely not rooting for one, but if the U.S. is handed a red card, there’s nothing like a free pizza to help make it a little better."
The Incident Behind the Red Card
Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute for serious foul play after his studs landed on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle. The referee initially did not show any card on the pitch, but after a VAR review, Brazilian official Raphael Claus issued the red card. The decision stirred controversy since Balogun appeared to be genuinely contesting the ball without intent to injure.
This ruling left the US with ten players for the final part of the match and ensures Balogun will miss the critical Round of 16 clash against Belgium. There is no appeal option for red cards at the World Cup, so the suspension stands firm.
