On the opening day, Canada and Paraguay were eliminated. Brazil and Mexico followed on Sunday. Monday saw Portugal knocked out by Spain, and the United States lost to Belgium. Argentina fought back to beat Egypt on Tuesday, while Switzerland edged Colombia on penalties to complete the round.
Here are the eight quarterfinalists and their upcoming matches:
Quarterfinalists Breakdown
Morocco stunned fans by winning on penalties against the Netherlands in the Round of 32, then crushed Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. As the first African team to reach consecutive quarterfinals, Morocco seeks revenge against France, which eliminated them last year.
France dominated Sweden 3-0 before narrowly beating Paraguay 1-0 thanks to a late penalty from Kylian Mbappe. This marks France's fourth straight quarterfinal appearance. A win over Morocco would send them to their third consecutive semifinal.
Norway reached the quarterfinals for the first time, fueled by Erling Haaland’s two late goals that ousted Brazil. They had also beaten Ivory Coast in a tight Round of 32 match. Norway faces England next.
England continues its streak of quarterfinal appearances, aiming for a semifinal spot after close wins against DR Congo and Mexico. Their next challenge is Norway.
Spain remains unbeaten without conceding a goal so far. Their 1-0 victory over Portugal knocked Cristiano Ronaldo out of the tournament. Spain meets Belgium in the quarterfinals.
Belgium bounced back from a shaky group stage to crush the U.S. 4-1. They face Spain next.
Argentina survived a tough battle against Egypt with a dramatic comeback, including a key goal from Lionel Messi. Their quarterfinal opponent is Switzerland.
Switzerland upset Colombia in penalties to advance despite being underdogs. They prepare to face Argentina.
