Erling Haaland's Brace Sends Norway Past Brazil to World Cup 2026 Quarterfinals
In a striking upset at the 2026 World Cup, Erling Haaland scored twice to lead Norway to a 2-1 victory over Brazil, securing their first-ever quarterfinal appearance. The match took place on a warm afternoon in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Norway started strong, controlling possession for the opening 10 minutes but struggled to create clear chances. Brazil nearly took the lead early when Matheus Cunha was fouled inside the box in the 12th minute, resulting in a penalty after a VAR review. Yet Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saved Bruno Guimarães' spot-kick, keeping the score tied.
Before halftime, Brazil’s Vinicius Jr. almost scored after stealing the ball in Norway’s penalty area, but Nyland denied his shot aimed at the near post. Despite Norway holding over 65% possession in the first half, Brazil led in expected goals with 1.06 compared to Norway's 0.35, thanks to their more dangerous opportunities.
Early in the second half, Brazil threatened again when Vinicius Jr. set up substitute Endrick for a one-on-one chance in the 59th minute, but Endrick mishandled the ball and missed wide.
Haaland finally broke the deadlock with a header in the 79th minute. Moments later, he doubled Norway's advantage by scoring from outside the box, beating Brazil's goalkeeper cleanly. His performance stunned the crowd and shifted momentum firmly in Norway's favor.
"I dreamt of playing in the World Cup with Norway, but I never expected to win against Brazil," Haaland said after the game. "I thought it was not possible to do some things, but I guess I’m wrong."
Norwegian forward Andreas Schjelderup added humor in the mixed zone, saying, "We’re all just happy that he’s Norwegian and that he’s playing for us."
Brazil managed a late consolation goal from Neymar on a penalty in the final moments, but time ran out before they could find an equalizer.
With this victory, Norway advances to the quarterfinals where they will face the winner of the Mexico versus England match. The next round is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at 5 p.m. ET in Miami.
