England Faces Livramento Injury Blow Ahead of World Cup Opener
England’s World Cup plans have been jolted on the eve of their opener, with Tino Livramento reportedly set to fly home after suffering a calf injury.
Thomas Tuchel’s squad were preparing to leave their Kansas City base for Texas, where they face Croatia in Wednesday’s Group L curtain-raiser, when the blow emerged. Up to this point, England had trained in Missouri with a full squad available and no obvious concerns. That illusion of calm has gone.
Livramento, who had settled into camp as a dynamic full-back option after a strong spell with Newcastle, withdrew from planned media duties on Sunday. That decision raised eyebrows at the time; subsequent reports now indicate a calf problem serious enough to rule him out of the entire tournament, not just Tuesday’s final training session.
It is a brutal twist for the defender, and a significant headache for Tuchel. Livramento’s energy and versatility offered England an attacking outlet from deep and valuable cover across the back line. Losing him before a ball has been kicked strips away one of the squad’s more flexible pieces.
Attention has already turned to the replacement list. Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is believed to be under consideration to come in for Livramento. Chalobah, comfortable in a back three or four, would bring a different profile: less of an overlapping threat, more of a stabilising presence in central defence.
England’s staff must now move quickly. Tournament regulations allow nations to replace injured players up to 24 hours before their opening match, which gives them until 3pm local time in Texas (9pm Irish time) to complete and lodge the necessary paperwork with FIFA.
The squad will board the flight south knowing that one of their number is unlikely to join them on the World Cup stage. How Tuchel reshapes his defensive options in Livramento’s absence will be one of the first big calls of England’s campaign.
