Portsmouth Sign Young Defender Benjamin Arthur on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to strengthen their back line with the season-long loan signing of young Brentford defender Benjamin Arthur.

The 20-year-old centre-half arrives at Fratton Park after a spell in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, where he featured six times last season. Those minutes north of the border added to his early exposure at the top level, having already made three senior appearances for Brentford.

Arthur, capped by England up to Under-20 level, fits the profile Portsmouth have been targeting: athletic, composed, and comfortable building from the back.

Manager John Mousinho made no attempt to hide his satisfaction at getting the deal done, calling it a key move to bolster his defensive options.

"We're thrilled to bring Benjamin here for the season to boost our defensive ranks," Mousinho said. "He possesses all the attributes you expect of a centre-back and is also more than comfortable with the ball at his feet.

"Despite his relatively young age, he already has experience of top-flight football, and we feel he can be a real asset as we look to progress in our third season in the Championship."

Portsmouth want to kick on, not just survive. Arthur now steps into a dressing room with that same ambition, tasked with turning potential into presence in the heart of their defence.
