Cristian Volpato Allegedly Tests Positive for Cocaine After Speeding in Sydney

Cristian Volpato, a notable figure for Australia at the recent World Cup, reportedly tested positive for cocaine following two speeding stops by New South Wales police.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who appeared three times representing Australia after switching from Italy, was caught driving at 109km/h on the Anzac Bridge, which is 50km/h above the speed limit. This occurred around 1am on a Friday morning.

After being pulled over, Volpato underwent a roadside drug test that allegedly detected cocaine. Authorities said a second sample will be analyzed to confirm the initial finding. Meanwhile, his driver’s license has been suspended for six months.

Earlier on the same night, close to 11pm Thursday, police stopped Volpato for speeding again, this time exceeding the limit by more than 20km/h. He received an infringement notice and took an alcohol test, which came back negative.

Background and Career

Volpato currently plays club football for Italian team Sassuolo. Born in Sydney, he represented Italy at Under-20 level after joining Roma in 2020 before choosing to play internationally for Australia.
