Chelsea Signs Marco Palestra: Record Transfer from Atalanta
Chelsea are closing in on one of the most expensive full-backs in Serie A history, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.
The 22-year-old right-back flew into the capital yesterday, and his camp is now ironing out the final details of a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge. Barring late drama, he will sign today.
Chelsea outmuscle Inter
This was a race Chelsea simply refused to lose. Inter pushed hard for Palestra and tabled a salary offer worth around €2.5m per season. Chelsea put that bid in the shade, doubling the proposal and convincing the defender with a net €5m per year deal.
The contract on the table runs for six years, with an option for a seventh – a clear statement that the Premier League club see Palestra as a cornerstone of their project rather than a short-term fix.
A deal that swells Atalanta’s coffers
The exact transfer fee still carries a slight haze, but the scale of the move is not in doubt.
British transfer pundit Ben Jacobs has described the fee as “in excess of €50m.” In Italy, Sky Sport Italia report a more precise structure: €57m fixed, plus a further €3m in performance-related add-ons.
On top of that, Atalanta have secured a 10 per cent cut of any future sale, a clause that could become extremely valuable if Palestra develops as Chelsea expect and moves again for a premium later in his career.
For Atalanta, it is another major piece of business, turning a homegrown Italian full-back into a windfall that will help fuel their next rebuild.
From Pisa to the Premier League
Palestra’s rise has been rapid. Not long ago he was battling in Serie A with Cagliari, as captured in that March 2026 clash at Arena Garibaldi in Pisa. Now he stands on the verge of the Premier League, walking into a dressing room where expectation is non-negotiable and the scrutiny is relentless.
Chelsea, though, are betting big that his blend of defensive aggression, athleticism and modern full-back instincts will translate seamlessly to English football.
The medical is under way. The paperwork is being finalised. Atalanta are counting the numbers. Chelsea are preparing the announcement.
The only question left is how quickly Marco Palestra can turn a blockbuster fee into performances that justify every euro.
