WBC Mandates William Zepeda vs Jadier Herrera to Unify Lightweight Titles
The World Boxing Council has made an uncommon decision to reduce the number of its lightweight titles by ordering a fight between William Zepeda and interim champion Jadier Herrera. Both fighters have until October 20th to negotiate terms for the bout, according to promoter Frank Warren.
With Shakur Stevenson moving up in weight to challenge for the super lightweight belt against Teofimo Lopez, Herrera earned the opportunity to compete for the interim lightweight title. He seized it decisively by overwhelming veteran Ricardo Nunez in their recent matchup. Meanwhile, the WBC stripped Stevenson of his lightweight title due to unpaid sanctioning fees.
Rather than simply promoting Herrera or scheduling him for a vacant title fight, the WBC allowed William Zepeda (34-1, 27 KO) to claim the official lightweight championship by defeating Lamont Roach Jr this past August. Zepeda, standing tall among the contenders, remains a tough challenge despite questions about his recent wins.
Zepeda's best victory came against a lesser opponent following a disqualification loss to Jon Fernandez. Still, he is eager for the unification bout, and Warren supports the matchup strongly. Unless Zepeda arranges a unification with Abdullah Mason or vacates the belt, it looks like Herrera will get the chance to face him in the ring soon.
