Anthony Joshua Names Murat Gassiev as Next Opponent If He Defeats Tyson Fury

Anthony Joshua has revealed his plan for the next fight if he manages to overcome Tyson Fury in their highly anticipated December showdown.

The bout between Joshua and Fury is considered one of the biggest in British boxing history and will take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on December 11th. Over the past decade, numerous efforts to bring this fight to an arena setting fell through, but the two fighters are finally set to collide in Wales.

There is more at stake than just pride, as the WBA's 'Super' heavyweight championship could be on the line. This may be the first time this particular belt is contested by two fighters who currently do not hold a world title, adding extra intrigue to the matchup.

WBA Title Controversy Surrounding Fury vs Joshua Fight

Russian heavyweight Murat Gassiev might not be thrilled about this situation. He holds the WBA 'Regular' heavyweight title after Oleksandr Usyk vacated his belts in June. Gassiev defended this crown in July against Peter Kadiru.

Although the WBA hasn't officially confirmed the Fury-Joshua fight will be for the Super title, Gassiev's camp has formally objected. John Wirt, Gassiev's co-promoter and legal counsel, demanded the WBA publicly deny reports that would bypass Gassiev's position as the sole world heavyweight champion.

"If anyone should be fighting for the WBA Super heavyweight title, it is Murat Gassiev, the reigning champion, not two boxers who currently hold no world title between them," wrote Wirt.

Joshua’s Clear Intentions Post-Fury Fight

Right after the press conference launching the Fury fight, Joshua spoke with talkSPORT and made it clear who he wants to face next if he wins. When asked about his next opponent, he responded simply: "Murat Gassiev."

The WBA rules require the Super champion to defend the title against the Regular champion. In today’s boxing scene, fighters often vacate belts to avoid mandatory fights that don’t appeal to them.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Joshua or Fury tried to dodge facing Gassiev, as the 32-year-old Russian doesn’t have much market appeal. Joshua’s payday against Gassiev would likely be much smaller compared to what he stands to earn from the Fury fight.

Still, Joshua seems ready to respect the rules and take on Gassiev if he comes out on top in December. That stance will surely please Team Gassiev.
