Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers on Loan to Deliver Trophies

Ben Godfrey has arrived at Ibrox with a clear message: Rangers should be winning trophies, and he intends to help make that happen.

The 28-year-old defender has joined on loan from Atalanta, with the Scottish club securing an option to make the move permanent next summer. After two stop-start seasons in Italy and a short spell in Denmark, this feels like a reset. A big one.

Godfrey, once a mainstay at Everton and a rising force at Norwich City before that, has seen his momentum stall. Game time has been scarce. He spent the second half of last season at Brondby, making 12 appearances as the Danish side finished fourth in the Superliga. Solid, but hardly the stage a player of his drive and profile craves.

Now the platform could not be bigger.

“I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here,” he said, the sense of release obvious. He called it a “massive honour” to join Rangers, a club he already knows carries expectations far beyond its own fanbase. “I know the size of the club,” he added, and that line matters. Players who come to Ibrox unaware of the scrutiny do not last long.

This move offers Rangers something they have been hunting for: a defender with Premier League experience, hardened by spells in different leagues, still young enough to grow but old enough to cope with pressure. It offers Godfrey something too – a chance to reassert himself at a club that demands intensity every week, not just in bursts.

The aim is not subtle. “I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times,” he said. No talk of transition. No gentle bedding-in. Trophies.

Rangers have given themselves flexibility with the option to buy at the end of the season. If Godfrey thrives in Glasgow’s goldfish bowl, they have a ready-made long-term piece for their back line. If not, both parties move on. For now, though, this feels like a player and a club meeting at the right moment: one looking for a resurgence, the other for a reliable edge in the title fight.

The next step is simple and unforgiving. At Ibrox, words about “silverware and exciting times” are not slogans. They are the minimum requirement.
