Bayern Munich Urged to Sign World Cup Star Johan Manzambi
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From his vantage point as a serial winner in Bavaria, the Bayern Munich legend is now openly urging his former club to move fast for one of the breakout names of this World Cup: Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi.
While Manchester United quietly build their next midfield around a cluster of targets, Müller wants Bayern to slam the door shut.
United circling as midfield rebuild gathers pace
Old Trafford’s engine room is being ripped up and rebuilt. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow, and United are scouring Europe for the right blend of legs, craft and personality in the middle of the pitch.
Ederson Silva is already on his way in a £35million deal, but the recruitment drive is far from over. United remain in the hunt for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s growing interest, and there is fresh encouragement over Aurelien Tchouameni, with Real Madrid now prepared to soften their stance on a sale that would tempt both United and Liverpool.
Reports in Italy also place United in the race for Croatia and Como talent Martin Baturina, who thrust himself into the spotlight with a goal against England in Croatia’s World Cup opener.
Amid all that noise, one performance on the other side of the Atlantic cut straight through.
Manzambi’s World Cup statement in LA
At SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Manzambi came off the bench and tore into Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two goals, a 4-1 win for Switzerland, and a 20-year-old who suddenly looked far too big for any shortlist to ignore.
It wasn’t a one-off. Manzambi has been trending upwards all season. At Freiburg, he emerged as one of the Bundesliga club’s standout performers, finishing the campaign with five goals and four assists and a growing reputation for doing a bit of everything, and doing it at full throttle.
That form had already drawn a queue of admirers. Manchester United were among the first to move, their interest dating back to March, when they joined Arsenal in tracking the Swiss midfielder ahead of the summer window. Now, after his World Cup brace, the competition for his signature is hardening.
Müller, though, wants Bayern at the front of the line.
Müller’s message to Bayern: don’t hesitate
Having watched Manzambi again on the international stage, Müller didn’t bother with subtlety when speaking to MagentaTV.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller said, making it clear Bayern’s scouting department know exactly who he is talking about.
“For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.”
Müller then drilled into what makes Manzambi such an intriguing fit for a club that demands versatility and mentality as much as talent.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6 he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
It is classic Müller: half-joke, half-scouting report, entirely serious about the potential.
A rising star enjoying his moment
Manzambi, for his part, is still processing the speed of his ascent. Two goals at a World Cup is a landmark for any player, let alone a 20-year-old still making his way in the Bundesliga.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” he said after Switzerland’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”
The innocence of that reaction contrasts sharply with the ruthlessness of the market now forming around him. United need midfielders. Arsenal are watching. Bayern have just been publicly nudged by one of their greatest ever players.
Manzambi has already made his statement on the pitch. The next move belongs to the clubs brave enough – and quick enough – to act.
