Just a year after triggering a £30m release clause to prise him from Ipswich Town, the board are now open to a permanent exit, according to Standard Sport. The message is clear: match the price, and Delap can go.
Interest is already building. Several Premier League clubs are circling, with Everton and Nottingham Forest keeping a particularly close eye on the situation. They see opportunity where Chelsea see surplus.
Tough first year, tougher pre-season
Delap’s debut campaign in west London never really caught fire. Two goals in all competitions tell the story of a forward who struggled to settle during a turbulent season that ended with Chelsea outside the European places and beaten by Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Pre-season has offered little respite. Under Xabi Alonso, Delap has failed to force his way into the manager’s long-term plans, with his performances doing little to shift the internal debate over his future. As Alonso shapes his squad before the September 1 deadline, the striker sits high on the list of potential departures.
That uncertainty has opened the door for Everton. Former Toffees scout Bryan King has already argued that Goodison Park would be the ideal platform for Delap, pointing to Romelu Lukaku’s transformative loan spell on Merseyside as a template. Lukaku, King noted, “went on loan and really made his name up at Everton” – a path Delap could look to mirror, whether via loan or permanent move.
Forest, too, are monitoring developments, aware that a striker with Premier League potential and something to prove rarely comes to market without a premium.
Chelsea’s attacking clear-out
Delap’s situation forms part of a broader reset in Chelsea’s forward line. The club are intent on trimming what they view as a bloated attacking department, with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu also drawing interest over both loan and permanent deals.
The plan is ruthless but simple: fewer bodies, more clarity, higher standards. A £50m sale would not only bank a sizeable profit on Delap after 12 months, it would also free up space and wages as Alonso refines his options.
While a permanent move remains the preferred outcome for Chelsea if their asking price is met, the club are juggling several other squad decisions at the same time.

It is not just the forwards under review. Talks are ongoing over potential exits for Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, as Chelsea weigh up offers and interest from across Europe. Tosin Adarabioyo, meanwhile, has drawn attention from Benfica, adding another layer to an already busy window for the club’s recruitment team.
Behind them, the next generation are also in focus. Young defenders Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino are being lined up for possible loan spells, with Chelsea keen to find the right environment for their development before the window shuts.

All of this leaves Alonso with a series of big calls to make before September 1. How many attackers does he truly trust? How much depth can he sacrifice in pursuit of a leaner, sharper squad?
For Delap, the stakes are just as stark. Either he secures a move that guarantees regular minutes and a central role – perhaps at Everton, perhaps at Forest, perhaps elsewhere – or he risks slipping into a secondary role at Chelsea as the new Premier League season begins.
