Barcelona Pursues Castello Lukeba as Centre-Back Option

Barcelona’s hunt for a new centre-back has dragged through the summer with more noise than movement. Now, at last, there is a concrete step: Castello Lukeba is on the table, and the club have picked up the phone.

For weeks, the Catalan side have been loosely linked with a string of names – Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Lukeba himself, even Cristian Romero. None of those stories has truly advanced. The position remains a glaring need, and the clock is ticking.

Direct contact with RB Leipzig

According to SPORT, Barcelona have now made formal contact with RB Leipzig to ask about Lukeba’s situation and his availability. This is not just another name on a long list. Internally, the Frenchman is viewed as a serious option.

Left-footed, composed and aggressive, Lukeba fits the profile Deco and Hansi Flick have been pushing for. Both are said to have kept him near the top of their defensive wishlist for a long time, seeing him as one of the standout young centre-backs in Europe.

The 21-year-old already has interest from the Premier League and several offers on the table, yet he has stayed in the Bundesliga so far. The chance to join Barcelona, though, attracts him, and he is open to making the leap.

His current market value sits at around €30 million. Barcelona’s call to Leipzig was aimed at understanding not just his status, but the real asking price for a potential transfer.

Araujo gone, Kounde in the spotlight

The context at the back has changed dramatically. Ronald Araujo’s move to Liverpool has left a hole at the heart of the defence and increased the urgency to reinforce. The position is no longer a medium-term concern; it is a priority.

Jules Kounde’s future now hangs over the entire operation. The French defender has offers in front of him and a departure is not off the table. His decision will shape Barcelona’s next move.

If Kounde leaves, the club are expected to push for a bigger, more expensive defensive signing, a clear statement piece for Flick’s back line. If he stays, the room for manoeuvre shrinks, and every euro will matter.

In that scenario, Lukeba becomes even more attractive. With Flick unconvinced by some of the other names floated, such as Bastoni and Romero, the Leipzig defender may be the most realistic blend of quality, age and cost, alongside Laporte.

Barcelona have finally started to move. The question now is whether they can turn admiration for Lukeba into a deal before someone else does.
