Barcelona's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez: Atlético Madrid's Firm Stance
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez has become the transfer saga that refuses to die, but in Madrid the answer remains the same: no.
The Argentine forward is the name written in bold at the top of Barça’s long-term planning board, the man they see leading Hansi Flick’s attack when the Robert Lewandowski era finally winds down. Inside the sporting department, they regard Álvarez as the ideal reference point for a new-look front line and are ready to stretch themselves financially to test Atlético Madrid’s resolve.
And they are stretching far.
A blockbuster bid in the making
At Camp Nou, executives are working on what would be one of the most aggressive bids in the club’s recent history: €135 million guaranteed, plus another €15 million in bonuses, once the World Cup dust settles.
It is the kind of number that makes even heavyweight clubs pause. The feeling in Barcelona is clear: a package of that scale, combined with Álvarez’s own ambition to embrace a new challenge at some point in his career, could eventually crack open the door to negotiations.
They believe that, for any club, turning down that kind of money would not be easy. Especially if the player, at some stage, signals he wants the move.
But this is Atlético. And Atlético are not blinking.
A cornerstone of Simeone’s project
For Diego Simeone, Álvarez is not just another forward. He is a pillar in a squad built to compete deep into every competition, a player locked in with a long-term contract until 2030 and protected by a towering €500 million release clause.
On the balance sheet and on the pitch, he is one of the club’s most valuable assets. Atlético have been consistent: they are under no financial pressure to sell, and they do not intend to dismantle the core of Simeone’s project for anything less than the full buyout clause.
Barcelona may be preparing a record-breaking offer by their own standards. Atlético respond by pointing at the contract.
Cerezo’s message: read the clause
Enrique Cerezo has once again stepped into the spotlight to cool the noise. The Atlético president, already well-practised in batting away questions about Álvarez, delivered another blunt reminder of the club’s stance.
“Julian is an Atletico Madrid player. Whoever wants him can come and look at the contract (the buyout clause), and if they're interested, they'll sign him; if not, they won't,” he said, addressing the constant links with Barcelona.
He did not try to dress it up. For Cerezo, this is not a chess match. It is a matter of black-and-white numbers and a firm line in the sand.
“It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand. Julian is an Atlético Madrid player, and I believe he will remain an Atletico Madrid player,” he added, as reported by El Desmarque.
So the saga rolls on: Barcelona pushing from the outside with a huge offer in the works, Atlético standing guard behind a €500 million clause, and Julián Álvarez caught at the centre of a battle that could define the next phase of both clubs’ attacking futures.
