Memphis Depay Slams Corinthians Over Contract Dispute
Memphis Depay has launched a blistering attack on Corinthians after the Brazilian club confirmed they will not renew his contract, leaving the Dutch forward suddenly out of work and threatening a legal fight.
The 32-year-old, who arrived in 2024 and quickly became a talisman at Neo Quimica Arena, took to social media to accuse the club’s leadership of breaking their word over what he insists was a clear two-year extension agreement.
Depay fumes over “breach” of agreement
Depay did not hold back in a sharply worded statement on X, claiming senior figures at Corinthians had committed to a renewal before abruptly walking away.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years,” he wrote. “This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement.
“I didn't want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests. In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”
The message landed like a grenade in São Paulo. A player who, when fit, dragged the team through a nine-match winning streak and into a trophy-laden spell now feels betrayed and is openly promising consequences.
Corinthians point to survival and “financial balance”
Corinthians quickly moved to frame the decision as a matter of survival, not betrayal. In a lengthy official note, the club stressed that walking away from Depay was about numbers, not emotions.
“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has decided not to renew the contract of athlete Memphis Depay,” the statement read. “This decision was taken solely and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution, which demands rigorous balance and responsibility in the management of available resources.
“We would like to express our deep gratitude to player Memphis Depay and his entire team, who from the start of negotiations sought the best possible agreement.”
The message was polite, almost deferential, but the core line was stark: with current and future obligations mounting, Corinthians say they simply cannot afford a new high-end deal for a global star.
From instant hero to sudden exit
On the pitch, Depay’s impact had been undeniable. He arrived as a marquee signing and immediately altered the club’s trajectory, leading a nine-game winning run and helping Corinthians collect three major trophies, including the Copa do Brasil.
When injuries allowed, he was the difference-maker, the kind of player Brazilian giants chase to ignite fanbases and dressing rooms alike. That makes the abrupt end feel even more jarring: a short, brilliant spell now overshadowed by accusations and statements.
The club acknowledged how complicated the whole saga had become.
“We understand that the process extended beyond the traditional deadline, but this is mainly due to the fact that we are dealing with a distinguished athlete,” Corinthians added. “The Board also recognises and values the tireless efforts of all the institution’s departments that worked to make the athlete’s stay feasible.”
Those words underline the internal struggle: sporting departments pushing to keep a star, financial realities pulling in the opposite direction.
Legal storm on the horizon
Depay, now officially a free agent, has promised to “react strongly” and made clear he sees this as more than a simple non-renewal. His insistence that a two-year extension had been explicitly agreed with the president and multiple departments hints at a looming legal dispute.
Corinthians, for their part, closed their statement by doubling down on the necessity of the decision.
“Given Corinthians’ current and future financial obligations, it became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible, at this moment, with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability. We recognise that this was a difficult decision, but undoubtedly necessary for the future of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista.
“We thank everyone for their understanding and will continue working so that Corinthians remains strong, solid, and victorious.”
The club has already lined up a press conference with president Osmar Stabile, where he will be forced to address Depay’s explosive claims head-on as Fernando Diniz’s squad prepares to move on without one of its biggest names.
Depay, meanwhile, heads into the market with medals in his luggage, anger in his voice, and a promise that Corinthians’ “unacceptable” conduct will not go unchallenged.
