Barcelona's Search for a Centre-Forward Takes Hit as Joao Pedro Signs with Chelsea
Barcelona’s search for a new centre-forward has taken another hit. One of the names high on Deco’s list is now gone for good.
Chelsea lock Joao Pedro down until 2034
Joao Pedro, repeatedly linked as a potential option for Barça as they brace for disappointment in their chase of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, has committed his future to Chelsea. The London club confirmed on their official channels on Saturday that the Brazilian forward has signed a new contract running all the way to 2034 – a statement as much as a signature, underlining just how determined Chelsea are to keep him.
For Deco, who has been scouring the market to reinforce Barcelona’s attack this season, that door has slammed shut. For Chelsea, it’s the logical reward for a player who has wasted no time becoming a central figure.
Joao Pedro arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025 and immediately stepped into the spotlight. He scored in both the semi-final and final of the FIFA Club World Cup, dragging Chelsea towards the trophy and announcing himself as a big-game forward on the world stage.
The goals did not dry up once the confetti was cleared.
Across his first full campaign in London, the 2025-2026 season, Joao Pedro hit 20 goals in all competitions. Supporters recognised his impact, voting him Player of the Season. For a club in constant transition, he became a rare constant: reliable, decisive, and increasingly central to how Chelsea attack.
“I always dreamed of playing for a big club”
The new deal clearly means as much to the player as it does to the club.
“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future,” Joao Pedro said after putting pen to paper.
His bond with his surroundings has grown quickly.
“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I joined,” he added, underlining why any outside interest was always likely to face a wall.
The mood around Cobham reflects that sense of unity.
“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals,” he continued.
Big moments, big goals
Chelsea did not hand out a contract to 2034 on potential alone. Joao Pedro has been delivering when it matters.
He struck twice against his former club Fluminense to fire Chelsea into the Club World Cup final, then scored again in the showpiece against Paris Saint-Germain to help seal the title. Those early nights set the tone.
In the Premier League, he opened Chelsea’s 2025-2026 campaign with the first goal of the season away at West Ham United, then grabbed the only goal in a tight, hard-fought win at Tottenham Hotspur. Different stadiums, same outcome: Joao Pedro deciding games.
Europe told a similar story. In the UEFA Champions League, he scored twice as Chelsea beat Napoli, extending his influence beyond domestic competition and underlining his status as a forward built for the highest level.
For Barcelona, his renewal is a setback in a summer of complex attacking plans. For Chelsea, it’s simple: they have their man, long term, and he is already playing like the kind of striker clubs across Europe are desperately trying to find.
