Aston Villa Near Signing Leon Goretzka as Emery's Rebuild Accelerates

Aston Villa are closing on a statement signing, with Germany international Leon Goretzka in advanced talks over a free transfer to Villa Park.

The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and Villa are understood to have held positive discussions as Unai Emery moves quickly to reshape a midfield stripped of experience and depth.

Emery has been forced into the market after Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup, ruling him out until next year. The manager has been hunting for a high-calibre replacement and Goretzka, with his pedigree and availability, has rapidly climbed to the top of the list.

Villa had been pursuing Goretzka’s former Bayern team-mate Joao Palhinha, but that trail has gone cold with the midfielder now expected to join Benfica instead. The focus has turned fully to Goretzka – and the deal is edging closer.

The numbers behind his career in Germany underline why. Across eight seasons at Bayern, Goretzka made 312 appearances and scored 51 goals, a consistent presence in a team stacked with elite talent. On the international stage, he has 73 caps for Germany and featured three times at this summer’s World Cup.

His medal haul is exactly what Emery wants in a dressing room that has just lost several big characters. Goretzka won seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern and lifted the Champions League in 2020, experience that would drop straight into a Villa side now trying to stay among the Premier League’s elite while juggling European ambitions.

But while one door looks set to open, several others have already closed.

This has been a summer of upheaval at Villa Park. Ezri Konsa left for Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea for £117m, a staggering fee that underlines just how aggressively Villa are trading to fund their rebuild.

Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United in July, taking his guile and top-flight know-how with him. Lucas Digne has already returned to Paris St-Germain, another experienced head out of the door.

Emery is trying to keep control of the situation, but not every battle is in his hands. Asked on Friday whether England striker Ollie Watkins would definitely remain at the club beyond the transfer deadline, with strong interest from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, the Villa boss could offer no guarantees.

“We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him,” Emery said. “I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.”

That is the reality at Villa now: big players can go, but only on the club’s terms and only if Emery can reload.

Goretzka, if the deal is completed, would be a powerful response. A Champions League winner walking in on a free transfer, at a time when rivals are paying huge fees for lesser résumés, would send a clear signal that Villa intend not just to survive this transition, but to come out of it sharper, tougher and more seasoned.

The question is whether they can land Goretzka and keep Watkins in the same window.
