Barcelona Cancels World Cup Tribute for Spain Stars Amid Fan-Police Clashes
Barcelona has decided not to hold a planned tribute honoring its eight Spanish players who won the World Cup. The announcement came from club president Joan Laporta, following recent confrontations between fans and police, which heightened political tensions in Catalonia.
Tensions at Camp Nou Lead to Cancellation
The ceremony was set for the Thursday La Liga match against Athletic Club at Camp Nou, aiming to celebrate the players’ achievements from the World Cup in New Jersey last month. While other top Spanish teams have already paid homage to their international winners this season, Barcelona abruptly canceled the event.
The decision followed violent incidents during Sunday’s 5-0 win over Elche. Traveling supporters were reportedly assaulted, and their pro-independence Estelada flags were confiscated by national police, sparking outrage and forcing the club to reconsider the matchday schedule.
Laporta Explains the Decision
"The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place. It will not take place because it is not being held in the most appropriate context. [The Royal Spanish Football Federation] understands the decision," Laporta said on Wednesday.
The president also defended the fans’ right to show the Estelada flag, emphasizing it as an expression of freedom and a reflection of many supporters' views. He stated, "Football should be used to unite, not to create certain confrontations."
Strong Criticism of Police Conduct
Laporta condemned the police actions during the Elche game, where officers allegedly used excessive force against supporters displaying regional symbols. He demanded accountability and sanctions if the claims are verified.
"We condemn and reject the disproportionate action of the national police officers who assaulted Barca fans for carrying the Estelada before the Elche game. We demand that this action, once the facts have been confirmed, be met with the appropriate punishment and sanctions," Laporta declared.
He concluded with a plea for fan safety: "We hope that appropriate punishment will help ensure that Catalans and Barca fans can carry the flag without fear of physical harm or stigmatisation by the State’s security forces."
Focus Returns to the Pitch
Despite the controversy overshadowing the lead-up to the match, Barcelona will host Athletic Club on Thursday evening without the planned tribute. The team aims to continue building on its commanding 5-0 win over Elche and keep momentum in La Liga amid ongoing off-field political issues.
