Aurelien Tchouameni Transfer Saga: Liverpool and Man Utd Eye Real Madrid Star

Aurelien Tchouameni arrived at Real Madrid as the next great pillar of their midfield. Two years on, he finds himself at the centre of one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been alerted that the France international has been told there are no guarantees over his long-term role at the Bernabeu, and Real have now put a number on his head: around €100m (£87m, $115m).

For two Premier League giants who have tracked him for years, the door that once seemed bolted is suddenly ajar.

Mourinho’s rebuild puts Tchouameni on the brink

Jose Mourinho has wasted no time reshaping Real Madrid in his image. The defensive line has already been reinforced with Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City to add guile and control further forward.

This is not a gentle refresh. It is a full-scale reconstruction.

Inside the club, there is a clear acceptance that more big moves are coming. Enzo Fernandez remains a priority target. Rodri is still admired. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is under close observation. There is also talk of a renewed push for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise.

Those ambitions come at a cost. To fund marquee arrivals, Real know they must cash in on major assets. Tchouameni has been pushed towards the front of that queue.

His situation was already delicate after a highly publicised training-ground altercation with Federico Valverde earlier this year. At that point, Madrid moved quickly to stress that the former Monaco midfielder remained central to their plans and would not be sold.

That stance has shifted. With Mourinho driving the rebuild, Tchouameni has now been informed that his place is no longer guaranteed. He and fellow Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga are both understood to be vulnerable if more midfielders arrive.

The message is clear: nobody in that area of the pitch is untouchable.

Liverpool’s long pursuit reignited

Liverpool’s interest in Tchouameni is not new and not casual. They pushed hard for him during his Monaco days, only to see him choose Madrid in 2022. The admiration never faded.

The club’s recruitment team has continued to track his progress closely, aware that he fits almost perfectly into what they want from a modern midfielder: athletic, tactically intelligent, press-resistant, capable of dictating tempo and breaking up play at the highest level.

With doubts over the long-term futures of several current midfielders and the club looking beyond domestic options such as Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, Tchouameni is viewed as a ready-made upgrade rather than a project. He walks into a Premier League side and raises the level immediately.

Liverpool have now been fully briefed on the shifting landscape in Madrid. They know the price, they know the opportunity, and they know this is the calibre of player for whom they are prepared to stretch.

Manchester United see a midfield game-changer

Across the north-west, Manchester United are watching just as intently.

Old Trafford’s hierarchy have tracked Tchouameni for years and rate him as one of the elite midfielders in world football. Internally, he is seen as a player who could transform the balance and quality of their midfield, giving structure to a unit that has often lacked it.

United have already stepped away from deals for Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson amid concerns over inflated valuations. They are wary of being dragged into bidding wars that do not make sporting or financial sense.

Tchouameni is different. His track record with France and Real Madrid, his age, and his profile at the top level make the €100m figure easier to justify than many of the numbers being thrown around this summer.

United, like Liverpool, have been kept fully up to date on Real’s evolving stance. If Madrid formally open the door, they are positioned to move.

Arsenal and Chelsea lurking, but two clear favourites

Arsenal and Chelsea have not turned away from the situation. Both are monitoring developments and would be ready to enter the conversation if the dynamics changed.

Right now, though, Liverpool and Manchester United are seen as the two clubs best placed to strike should Real Madrid decide to cash in. Both have long-standing relationships with the player’s camp, both have a defined need in midfield, and both understand that opportunities at this level rarely present themselves twice.

Inside the Bernabeu, there is also a strategic calculation at play. Tchouameni has just two years left on his current contract. His stock remains high. Push the asking price too far beyond €100m and Real risk scaring off serious bidders at a time when big clubs are increasingly cautious about overpaying.

They believe this is the sweet spot: a fee that reflects his status while still tempting Europe’s wealthiest.

A decision that could reshape three midfields

For Mourinho, Tchouameni represents both a luxury and a solution. Sell him, and Real unlock the funds to chase Fernandez, Rodri or Olise and continue the rebuild at pace. Keep him, and they retain a top-level midfielder but may have to compromise elsewhere.

For Liverpool and Manchester United, the stakes are just as high. This is not a speculative punt on potential. It is a move that could define their midfields for the next five years.

The lines of communication are open. The price is set. The player knows his status has changed.

Now the question hangs over Europe’s summer: who blinks first?
