Barcelona's Urgent Search for Experienced Centre-Back
Barcelona’s transfer priorities have shifted again. Ronald Araujo is at Liverpool on loan, and that single move has opened up a worrying hole in the heart of Hansi Flick’s defence.
Inside the club, Deco has made his stance clear: Barcelona need an experienced centre-back, and they need him before the window shuts.
Araujo gone, depth exposed
Araujo’s departure has stripped the back line of its reference point. What remains is talented, but thin.
Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen are now the main options at centre-back. Four names for a long 2026/27 season that will stretch across LaLiga, Europe and domestic cups. On paper, it looks like coverage. In reality, it leaves precious little room for rotation, injuries or dips in form.
The pressure on Deco has ramped up. Barcelona do not believe this group alone can carry them through an entire campaign at the level demanded.
Cortes at a crossroads
One internal solution still sits on the table: Álvaro Cortes. Flick has not closed the door on him, and the defender remains in the conversation for a first-team role.
But that’s all it is for now — a conversation.
Within the club, doubts persist about whether Cortes is ready to jump from sporadic appearances to the grind of a full season as a regular. Barcelona are wary of handing such a heavy responsibility to a player they still see as developing.
There is another twist. Cortes does not want to go back to Barça Atlètic. He has offers from elsewhere and is open to leaving. A transfer in the coming days is entirely possible, which would strip Flick of another defensive option and sharpen the urgency of Deco’s search.
That is why the sporting director is not looking for another project. He wants someone who can walk through the door and compete for a starting place immediately.
Deco’s very specific target
The profile has been drawn up in detail: a left-footed centre-back, experienced, reliable, and financially viable.
Barcelona admired Luka Vuskovic before his move to Brighton. The talent is not in question. But at 19, he falls into the same category the club are trying to avoid right now — another youngster who would need time, patience and minutes that Flick cannot guarantee.
The same logic rules out Jon Martin of Real Sociedad for the current need. Barcelona like him, but again, his age and stage of development do not match the urgency of the role.
Even Cristian Romero, proven at the highest level and rich in experience, did not fit the brief perfectly. The club’s thinking is not simply to grab the biggest name available. The balance of age, profile, playing style and cost all matter.
Barcelona are hunting a specialist: a left-footed centre-back who can stabilise the defence from day one, offer leadership in a relatively young back line and still fit within the club’s tight financial constraints.
The clock is ticking on the window. Deco knows the next centre-back through the door cannot just be another signing. He has to be the one that holds the season together.
