Assim Madibo Receives Five-Match Suspension for Serious Foul Play
Assim Madibo has been handed a five‑match suspension for the tackle that broke Canada midfielder Ismael Kone’s leg at the FIFA World Cup, a decision that underlines just how severely FIFA has judged the incident.
The Qatar midfielder saw red in the 54th minute of last week’s group-stage match, a game Canada went on to dominate and win 6-0. The challenge ended Kone’s tournament and left Qatar a man down in a contest that quickly turned into a rout.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee labelled the incident “serious foul play,” imposing a five-game ban that will stretch well beyond this World Cup. Madibo retains the right to appeal through the FIFA Appeal Committee, but for now his tournament is effectively over.
The fallout has not been confined to the pitch. In the days after Kone underwent surgery, Madibo visited the Canada international in hospital. The meeting, away from the cameras and the noise, offered a different image to the one replayed in slow motion across the world.
“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field,” the Qatar Football Federation said in a statement. “We wish the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch.”
Madibo, 29, was born in Khartoum and has been a mainstay for Qatar, earning 53 caps for his country. His absence now leaves a sizeable hole in the heart of their midfield at a critical moment.
Upcoming Match
Qatar close out their group campaign on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Victory would still be enough to push them into the knockout rounds.
They will have to chase it without one of their most experienced players.
