Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Mendy from Rayo Vallecano
Hull City have torn up their own transfer history to land centre-back Mendy from Rayo Vallecano, sealing a club-record deal that underlines their intent ahead of their Premier League return.
The 21-year-old Senegal international has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with Hull holding an option to stretch it to a sixth season. It is a long-term bet on a defender they believe can anchor their back line at the highest level.
Club officials have kept the fee under wraps, but they have been clear on one point: this move eclipses the record they set only weeks ago. That benchmark belonged briefly to Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who arrived from Olympiacos for a package worth more than £20 million including add-ons. Hull have gone bigger again.
“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” he said, describing himself as “a very athletic player” and “a defender at heart” who relishes playing out from the back, cleanly but aggressively when required.
“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little,” he added. “So it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”
Hull are not buying on potential alone. Mendy arrives in East Yorkshire with experience that belies his age, including back-to-back runs to the final of the Conference League. Last season he played 28 times in La Liga for Rayo Vallecano, scoring twice and showing he can threaten in the opposition box as well as protect his own.
The European nights have already hardened him. This year he reached the Conference League final with Rayo, only to lose to Crystal Palace. The season before, he was part of the Real Betis squad that made it all the way to the same competition’s showpiece, where they were beaten by Chelsea. Two finals, two defeats, both against Premier League opposition – a harsh education in English standards before he has even played a domestic minute there.
That rise has been mirrored on the international stage. In March, Mendy earned his first senior cap for Senegal, featuring for the Teranga Lions in a fixture against The Gambia. For a defender still only 21, that debut underlines why he is viewed as one of West Africa’s standout emerging talents.
He now becomes Hull City’s eighth signing of a busy summer window following promotion. The Tigers have rebuilt with purpose, and this deal feels like the cornerstone of that work rather than a late flourish.
On August 22, Manchester United visit the MKM Stadium for Hull’s Premier League opener. By then, the club will expect their record signing not just to settle, but to stand tall at the heart of a defence about to face one of English football’s biggest tests.
