Arsenal Eyes Kone Transfer as Italian Club Faces FFP Deadline
Arsenal have stepped into the gap left by Paris Saint-Germain and are now closing in on an agreement to sign highly rated France midfielder Kone, with the clock ticking loudly on his Italian club’s finances.
For weeks, the 25-year-old had his eyes on Paris. Corriere della Sera report that Kone initially favoured a lucrative summer switch to PSG and turned down interest from Atletico Madrid in the process. The French champions, though, never moved from admiration to action. No bid, no formal push.
Arsenal did not wait.
With PSG stalling, the north London club opened talks with the player’s entourage and have made what sources describe as significant progress over a move to the Emirates. Personal terms are not thought to be a major obstacle, with all parties aware that time is tight for the selling club.
That urgency comes from off the pitch. The Serie A side are under intense pressure to approve a sale before June 30 to comply with strict Financial Fair Play rules. Internally, they had set a firm €50 million price for a midfielder who has flourished under Gian Piero Gasperini, becoming a cornerstone of their high-energy, aggressive style.
The market reality is different. With the deadline looming and the books still needing to be balanced, recruitment specialists now believe a deal in the region of €45 million could be enough to unlock the transfer. The need to sell is starting to outweigh the desire to hold firm.
For Mikel Arteta, Kone is not just an opportunity signing. He is a tactical piece.
Arteta is said to view the powerful Frenchman as an ideal solution to ease the defensive and physical load currently carried by Declan Rice. Kone’s ability to win the ball and then drive it forward at pace, punching passes through the lines, fits the manager’s demand for a quicker, more vertical rhythm in midfield. His capacity to circulate the ball at high speed could sharpen Arsenal’s transitions and give their build-up a more urgent edge.
It would also take the club down a different path to another long-standing target. Martin Zubimendi has been closely monitored, but his more measured, slower tempo on the ball has increasingly been seen as an awkward fit for Arteta’s fluid, high-intensity system. Kone offers something else: a more direct, dynamic profile to sit alongside Rice and unlock space for Arsenal’s attacking players.
For now, the player’s stage changes from the boardroom to the global spotlight. Kone will turn his attention to international duty as France begin their World Cup campaign with a demanding opener against Senegal. His representatives, though, are not easing off. They are determined to push the transfer through quickly, aware that the Italian club’s financial deadline at the end of the month is both a threat and an opportunity.
Arsenal’s task is clear. They must nail the timing and structure of their first official offer, striking a balance between exploiting the seller’s need to move and respecting the value of a midfielder entering his prime. Handle that correctly, and a marquee addition to Arteta’s midfield could be in place before the FFP clock hits zero.
