Arsenal’s run-in has lost one of its most reliable pillars. Ben White will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury and is set to sit out England’s World Cup campaign, in a double setback for club and country at the sharp end of the year.

The 28-year-old defender damaged his knee in the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 win at West Ham on Sunday, a victory that kept the Gunners’ title charge on course but came at a heavy price. White was later seen leaving London Stadium in a knee brace, the first visible sign that this was more than a routine knock.

The scan results were brutal.

Arsenal confirmed he has sustained a “significant medial ligament injury”, ruling him out of the final two Premier League fixtures and the Champions League final on 30 May. For a player who has quietly become one of Mikel Arteta’s most trusted lieutenants, the timing could hardly be crueller.

The club set out the immediate plan in a short statement: “Our medical team are now managing Ben's recovery and rehabilitation programme, with everyone fully focused on supporting the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations." The message was clear. This season is over. The next target is July.

White’s campaign has been a study in adaptability and resilience. He has made 30 appearances in all competitions, starting Arsenal’s last five matches as the pressure has risen and the margins have shrunk. His league involvement has fluctuated — just nine Premier League starts — but when the run-in arrived, Arteta turned back to him.
