Carlo Ancelotti Stands by Neymar’s World Cup Selection as Brazil Legend Retires

Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil's head coach, has addressed the retirement of Neymar from international football, defending his decision to select the forward for the 2026 World Cup squad. Although Neymar struggled physically, Ancelotti emphasized the player’s importance to the team beyond technical contributions.

Neymar Ends 16-Year International Career

The 34-year-old superstar concluded a 16-year journey with Brazil following their unexpected round of 16 loss to Norway. Despite the early exit, Ancelotti confirmed that Neymar deserved his spot on the roster heading into the tournament in North America.

Physical Fitness Concerns and Attitude Praised

During interviews with ESPN, Ancelotti acknowledged Neymar’s calf injury and lack of match fitness, which sidelined him for Brazil’s initial group matches against Morocco and Haiti. He said, "I think he didn’t contribute on a technical level as it was hoped he could, because he couldn’t. But, in terms of attitude, it was a very positive attitude. I have a lot of affection for him, I thanked him for his attitude, for his behavior, and I think it was the right decision to include him on the 26-man roster."

Yet the coach expressed disappointment that Neymar was not fully prepared physically at the start of the tournament: "The only thing that bothered me is that Neymar could have prepared himself better during that lead-up period. He could have been ready for game one instead of game four. That was the only disappointing part."

Brazil Prepares for Next Generation

With Neymar stepping away, Ancelotti is focused on rebuilding the national team ahead of the 2030 World Cup. The shift will move away from reliance on past icons toward emerging talent. The former Real Madrid manager stated, "I think that players like Neymar, who already commented yesterday, and with all due respect to his decision. I believe that in history, one generation ends and another has to come, and it has to be better than the last one."

Other Veterans Expected to Retire Soon

Ancelotti also hinted that several other experienced players may soon retire from international duty. Regarding Casemiro, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, he said, "I think so. It is a period that is coming to an end. Obviously, we have to thank all of them, and I have a lot of affection for all of them. But I think the idea that a player over 30 is done means that we have to think about the future.... Some of these players will be there, obviously. Marquinhos, for example. Alisson, we’ll see."
