Aaron Tshibola Called Up to DR Congo's World Cup Squad
Aaron Tshibola’s long road back to the global stage has taken its most dramatic turn yet. Kilmarnock’s midfield driving force has been called into DR Congo’s 2026 World Cup squad, completing a remarkable rise from relegation scrap to the biggest tournament in the game.
The 29-year-old, back at Rugby Park for a fourth spell after signing at the end of the winter window, received a late call-up to Sébastien Desabre’s 26-man squad following an injury to Rocky Bushiri. One man’s misfortune, another’s opening – and Tshibola has kicked that door down over the past few months.
He will now head to the finals as part of a DR Congo group pitched into a demanding Group K alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan. From the Scottish Premiership’s survival fight to a date with Cristiano Ronaldo’s nation: the contrast could hardly be sharper.
For Kilmarnock supporters, though, this feels entirely earned. “Tish”, their self-anointed “midfield controller”, has been the heartbeat of Neil McCann’s side since his return. Week after week he has anchored the middle of the park, breaking up play, knitting attacks together and, crucially, delivering when the pressure on Killie’s top-flight status tightened.
His run of man-of-the-match displays arrived at exactly the moment the club needed composure and personality. Kilmarnock stayed up; Tshibola stood out. Desabre clearly took note.
McCann did not hide his pride at seeing one of his key men elevated to the world stage, praising Tshibola’s consistency, professionalism, commitment, endeavour and footballing ability. The manager spoke of a player who has not simply coasted on talent but built this call-up through relentless standards.
Now comes the reward. A childhood dream realised, a World Cup summer ahead, and a Kilmarnock midfielder stepping into a group featuring some of the most vaunted nations on the planet.
The club have made no secret of their delight, sending him off with their blessing and a simple message: go and make it count.
