Galatasaray Makes €45 Million Bid for Gabriel Martinelli
Galatasaray have put their cards on the table.
The Turkish champions have submitted a formal €45 million (£38m) bid for Gabriel Martinelli, a move that drags Arsenal into a major decision over one of Mikel Arteta’s most important players.
Galatasaray go big for a headline act
The offer, reported by transfer specialist Florian Plettenberg, is now officially with Arsenal, leaving the hierarchy at the Emirates to decide whether to cash in or hold firm. Galatasaray have made Martinelli their undisputed priority this window, seeing him as the statement signing to elevate their project.
It fits a clear pattern. The Istanbul club have already shown serious pulling power in recent seasons, luring the likes of Victor Osimhen and Wilfried Zaha to RAMS Park. Martinelli is the next level of ambition: a marquee wide forward in his prime, someone they believe can shift the dial in the Champions League as they chase relevance among Europe’s elite.
Arteta’s dilemma: money now or a mainstay for years?
For Arteta, this is not a straightforward call. Arsenal’s attacking structure has already been reshaped this summer. Leandro Trossard has gone to Besiktas, while only one forward, Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, has arrived to bolster the frontline.
Martinelli is not just another winger in that mix. He has been central to Arteta’s rebuild, a constant in the side that dragged Arsenal back to the top of English football and back into the latter stages of the Champions League. Selling him would not simply be a financial play; it would mean tearing out a key piece of the manager’s tactical puzzle.
The timing makes it even more delicate. At 25, Martinelli is stepping into his peak years, with vast experience already behind him at the highest level. Letting him go now would hand Arsenal a hefty injection of funds, but at the cost of a player who still has room to grow and dominate.
From unknown teenager to title-winning cornerstone
Martinelli’s story at Arsenal has always carried a sense of momentum. Signed from Ituano in 2019 as a relative unknown, he exploded onto the scene with his direct running, relentless work rate and eye for goal. He quickly became a fan favourite at the Emirates, capable of operating anywhere across the front line but at his most devastating cutting in from the left.
Last season underlined just how far he has come. He played 53 matches in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and adding seven assists as Arsenal finally reclaimed the Premier League title for the first time since 2004. He also played his part in their run to the Champions League final, where they fell to Paris Saint-Germain.
Those numbers sit on top of a substantial body of work. Since arriving in North London, Martinelli has made 278 appearances in all competitions, with 62 goals and 36 assists. He has helped Arsenal lift the Premier League and the 2023 FA Community Shield, embedding himself in the club’s modern era as one of its defining forwards.
Arsenal’s wider picture
Arsenal have not stood still in this window. They have moved to strengthen key areas, bringing in goalkeeper Illan Meslier, winger Tzolis and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The squad looks deeper, more rounded, more prepared for another gruelling campaign on multiple fronts.
The calendar does not give them much breathing room to ponder, either. Arsenal open their competitive season against Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16, before starting their Premier League title defence at home to Coventry City on August 21.
By then, the club must decide: take Galatasaray’s money and reshape the attack again, or back Martinelli as a cornerstone of their future and slam the door on one of the boldest bids of the summer.
