2026 World Cup: Which Third-Place Teams Are Advancing and Their Round of 32 Opponents
The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is almost finished, and for the first time, a round of 32 will follow. With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the eight best third-placed teams also qualify for the knockout rounds, adding complexity to who faces whom next.
This guide keeps track of the third-placed teams currently positioned to advance and lays out the potential round-of-32 fixtures, including possible opponents for Germany.
Ranking Criteria for Third-Place Teams
The ranking of third-placed teams is primarily based on points earned during the group phase. Ties are broken using goal difference, then goals scored. If teams still remain level, fair play points are considered, where yellow and red cards deduct points (one point for yellow, three for a yellow-red, four for red, five if both received in a single match). Should parity persist, FIFA World Rankings are used as a final measure.

Germany could face third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D, or F. Current odds suggest a higher chance of meeting the third-placed team from Group C or D.
